Why won't Vista save my audio settings?

I have many, many issues with Vista Premium that came with my system (I frankly do not like it), but this bug in particular affects me every time I load up the computer.

To get bass in my 5.1 audio setup (via Soundblaster Audigy) with latest dirvers) while playing games, I have to always go to the speaker icon in the tray, right click and select Playback Devices, click Speakers, hit Configure, skip past Choose Your Configuration (5.1 selected), skip past Customize Your Configuration (all but Side Speakers selected), and then manually disable all options in the final menu for Select Full Range Speakers before finally saving the settings.

I have to do this every....single....time.... I load up the computer if I want to hear bass from my Home Theater setup for games (I connect to my HDTV). The last setting is never saved by the computer when I restart.

Is there a solution that any of you know of?

/pulls thread's lifeless corpse out of it's grave...

I believe this is an issue with Creative's cards (or their speaker system, both of mine are from Creative ><). I had this issue on XP as well, so I doubt it's Vista's doing. I just (like minutes ago) removed my sound card and have bass control again. Only problem is Creative put rear and side speakers on the plug and my onboard doesn't seem to recognize all four speakers like that. :x

Well, Creative's software isn't messing up, it's Vista's audio control program that isn't saving itself properly. I do have the latest drivers BTW.

You have no evidence its not the creative drivers. Those settings are pushed down to it, its actually unclear whos fault this is (but my bet based on experience is Creative not MS, in this case). Did you try to reinstall them?

Not only did I try to reinstall them, I have actually bought a different card (for other reasons) with the problem still remaining.

Same vendor?

I tried the newest modern Creative card that uses different drivers than the Audigy series. It didn't help.

Like I said, the problem isn't with the soundcard's software because it saves my setting changes. Only Vista's audio program refuses to save that one setting.

I've read having more then one sound card listed in Device Manager can screw up the save settings with Audigy cards, long shot I know but check you don't have anything listed twice (sound wise) that should not be there.

Side Note I'm using an Audigy 4 via 5.1 analogue, bass is always fine,I'm using the Audigy sound drivers before latest version(was only a minor installation fix I believe with latest version).

I suspect its the Creative drivers that are causing the issue.
Ironically a member over at Creative forums has been trying to fix most of the bugs and now has had to stop any further development etc... due to legal reasons link.

Yes, I have the same problem too, Full range speakers configuration is lost after restart .. maybe we should send this to Creative site too 😛 .. I have a X-Fi Extreme Audio

The sound parameter settings will be stored in a file, typically (at least in the old days) an ".ini" file.

The settings in this file are being reset upon reboot. Try to find the file that contains the settings & then find out what application is resetting it on reboot. Again, all kinds of ways to attack something like this.
1.Check out the files in the Creative folders (C:\Program Files) to see if you can find where the settings are kept (you might be able to set it read only). Remember to check hidden files.
2.Use the search capability to check file date/times immediately after a reboot to see what files have been changed immediately at startup.
3. Use the line-by-line initiating sequence of safe mode & try to analyze what sound type files are being loaded.
4. Use msconfig.exe (in PCHEALTH) to analyze what is in startup. Turn off just about everything. There should only be two or three things needed to be initialized at startup (eg, mouseware). Look at the ".ini" type files list & play around with disabling these to assess effects. Check running services. For example, I see listed in Services "Windows Audio". Is this needed if you have your own separate sound application? What happens when you disable "Windows Audio" Service? Try it & see. It could responsible for the thing overwriting your Creative sound settings.

If in doing all of this, you may be lucky & actually find the ".exe" that is resetting your sound parameters & just disabling this ".exe by changing its name or removing it from startup should get what you want.

I also remember that in the old days, the sound line settings & enviornment could be custom set in the Autoexec.bat (& config.sys). It may be possible to use the Autoexec batch to write the settings which you want into the Creative Sound settings file at startup.

For all those who have this happen more recently. As so much time has gone by and so much has changed. I was pulling hair for ages and wish i had stumble across this message so...might help someone searching google as i found you all!

Creative wouldnt remember settings so i took some of info from here:

http://forums.creative.com/showthread.php?t=185907&page=3

disabled everything in start up to do with creative. Incidentally was no Ctxhlpr whatever file so i got rid of others.

Then removed everything to do with Sound devices and tv card in system, device manager, disabled Everything apart
from Soundblaster under sound devices.

Then took info from here:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=154408

specifically regarding the security tab in the creative folder options.
I then set them to the same as my main pc in pc room.

No entries should be set to deny.
From top to bottom:

CREATOR OWNER: Allow Special permissions only
SYSTEM: Allow all but not "special permissions"
Administrators(Yourpcname\Administrators: Allow every entry apart from "special permissions" (leave unchecked)
Users: Allow "Read&Execute", "List Folder contents", and "Read" only
Trusted Installer: Allow "List folder contents", "Special Permissions" only.

Seems to have done the trick..
