Why won't Valve games (HL2, TF2, etc..) stay in 5.1 mode on my PC?

I have an Auzentech X-Plosion card, and everytime I load Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, etc.., I have to go back into the options menu and set it back to 5.1 audio (it defaults itself back to 2 channel).

Anyone know how I can fix this?

I had this same problem and then I realized that even though I had my audio cables plugged into my sound card by color, that wasn't the correct configuration. So I went into my sound card options and realized I had to switch the front speaker slot with the sub slot and that fixed it. Not sure if this will help you though.

Nah, I'm using the digital out hooked up to a receiver. The 5.1 audio works in the game, I just have to switch it to 5.1 in the options menu everytime I start the game
