Why won't some DVD players read CD-R's????

My Sony 530D player will not play CDR music or VCD's that I can author and burn onto CDR. Some players can, some can't. Does anyone know why, exactly? I'm beginning to think that the DVD's operating system has been told to ignore CDRs, not that there is some laser frequency problem.

If they have been told to ignore CDRs, then, how does a DVD player know it is a CDR?

If it because it is missing some sort of header information on the CDR, how can I put that information on the disk when I burn it?

Can I upgrade the DVD players operating system?

I want to play CDRs on my DVD !!! dasm

CD-R's have a different reflectivity than DVD's or regular CD's. Some players cope well with that, others don't. And to add to the confusion, different brands of CD-R's have different reflectivity, meaning some brands might work in your player and other brands may not....

There's no conspiracy and nothing you can upgrade other than getting a different DVD player that is capable of playing CD-R's.

Forgive me for asking the obvious, but it's what I deal with best anyway. :D

Are the CD-Rs that this DVD player is refusing to read multi-session or single session? Have they been closed? Do you have a UDF reader installed on the system that uses the Sony player?

Jim

Yes, they are closed. I have tried four different brands of CDRs. I have tried burning at 1X. I have tried Music CD and VCD format (using Nero). But, they have always been single session, closed.

As far as UDF, I am ignorant. Tell me more.

I have not tried a CD-RW disc. Is that worth pursuing?

You might try using a CD-RW disc. But write it as if it was a CD-R disc, i.e., NOT as if it was a big floppy disc (that's what UDF format is for).

The reflectivity of a CD-RW is closer to that of a DVD, so it is more likely than CD-R to work in your DVD player.

JonB,

If they're single-session and closed, then you've done about as well as you can with CD-R -- short of perhaps finding a specific example (brand) of the medium which works with your DVD drive.

I asked about UDF because of what Workin' pointed out. You could write CD-RW discs as CD-R in the hope that they'd work in the player because of the fact that their reflectivity characteristics are closer to those of a DVD. Or, if you had a UDF reader (It's just a small freeware utility from Adaptec.) installed, you could read the regular CD-RW format. OMG, I just realized that this player may be a standalone DVD player. I was thinking about DVD-ROM drives. I was going to say that all DVD-ROM drives I've seen were multi-play capable and should read CD-Rs. Sorry about that. That makes the UDF thing a useless suggestion. It's software that has to be installed on a PC which uses a DVD-ROM drive.

Jim

Yup, my bad. You did say "player" after all. What can I say? I'm old, and I wasn't the brightest porch light on the block when I was young!

:D

Please do let us know how you get along!

Jim
