Why won't Nintendo discount the Wii U?

ArsTechnica (by way of Eurogamer) is reporting that Nintendo is most likely ending the Wii U's production this week.

Hoping to pick up a Wii U for under $200 and a Vita for under $150 this holiday season

I don't know if you're looking for portability (since you mentioned the Wii U), but the PlayStation TV can play a good number of Vita games and may be quite a bit cheaper since Sony was practically giving them away.

I'm glad I got one, though in hindsight I may have waited until the JCPenney deal. A lot of games like Bayonetta you can't play anywhere else, backwards compatibility isn't going to be a thing with the Switch and I anticipate the tablet controller becoming increasingly rare with no replacements available.

Yeah I almost bought a PS TV for $40 last year, but found out games like Uncharted Golden Abyss aren't compatible because of the touch functionality.

I really don't care about the portability. I really just wanted to play Uncharted Golden Abyss and Persona 4 Golden (which I know would work with PS TV)

I just don't understand why they never released a Zelda earlier for the WiiU or even made another Metroid. Why even release Zelda for the WiiU at all now? If they had plans to discontinue the WiiU they should have just made it exclusive to the Switch to get more people to buy it. Zelda releases are always anticipated. Would have been a huge exclusive. I just don't understand Nintendo sometimes.

This is the same company that instead of releasing a Mario 64 successor at Gamecube launch, instead released a Luigi game where you vacuumed up ghosts. It's the same company that showed us a dark and gritty version of a Zelda game on Gamecube in conceptual stages, then a year later they reveal Windwaker.

I haven't understood Nintendo in nearly 2 decades. That probably won't change any time in the near future either.

Yea you're totally right, all of us can speculate on things, on their new console, but nobody can really understand Nintendo. I'm definitely going to buy the Switch just for Zelda but imagine how many more people would have bought a WiiU if they would have released even just a new Zelda for it. Sorry but we didn't need a remaster of a Zelda that many people didn't like to begin with even though I really enjoyed Wind Waker but it's definitely one of the weaker Zelda games.

I know the Wii U is a failure as far as sales, but it seems weird to discontinue it now, especially when it is still selling for the same price as XBOne and PS4.

The Xbox 360 was produced until this year....3 years after the launch of the XBone
As far as I know the PS3 is still being produced, 3+ years after the launch of the PS4

Yet Nintendo is going to cease production of the Wii U 5 months before the release of the Switch?

Like the "New" 3DS XL GALAXY they came out with last month. Totally out of the blue.

I remember there was an interview where basically they said that Wii U customers were their customers even if the Wii U was a failure, and it wouldn't be right to never deliver on the Zelda game that was promised.

I've had a ton of fun with the Wii U, so will probably get the switch as well. Might even be my go to multiplat machine, since for me portability > graphic fidelity (within reason)
