Why won't my original Windows XP OEM home disc work?

I'm just wondering why this is a problem? I have a Windows Home Disc that works on my PC. I used it to install on my new laptop and it just hangs at the dos like screen with the _ blinking. I decided to make a ISO and burn it to disc and it got farther than the original disc as in it is actually working.

agh, it installed, but the dvd won't respond to any cds... it just shows the dvd drive as empty when I put a cd in. Windows Xp worked just fine installing. I think I need SP2.

Agreed ... you should be able to read it ok
Try slowing down the cd drive read speed
Or as an alternate, call the company that it came
from say, HP or Dell or Microsoft if it is a generic
Retail or OEM CD ... if it really is bad & a legit cd
it has numbers on the hub ... Microsoft will replace
it, if you can't read it .. they just need some proof
of it's authenticity

I would suspect your drive may be acting flaky. Have you cleaned the XP CD?

Disc is clean. This is the weirdest problem. The only disc my PC will read in Windows XP which has sp2 btw, is the BACKUP COPY OF WINDOWS XP OEM HOME I MADE. It will autostart and I can read the data off of it. If I put in any other disc, all it does is spin and stall the system until I open the drive again. I had a spare dvd burner so I hooked it up VIA USB and I could install stuff that would not run on the native drive.

Replace the cd / dvd drive and see what happens
You might also try deleting the drive from Device
Manager and let XP redetect it .. see what happens

Did you recently install any new cd / dvd burning
programs ? ? ?

Do you have INCD (nero) or Roxio Drag to Disc installed ? ?

If you do, you can only have one or the other,
not both at the same time
