Why wont my NEC 3550a burn CDs on XP?

buck

Well i was able to burn dvds and cds using Windows VISTA but that key came close to expiring so i went back to xp. Now I cant burn cds without it failing at 9%. I have tried using nero 6 and 7. I have also tried using creatives cd burner software and no go as well. I have just reinstalled a second time and its still not working.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. It reads cds/dvds fine, it shows up as NEC 3550a.

OP, did the drive work in XP before? Have you tried a different IDE cable?

thanks for the fixed link 🙂

I dont think i burned anything on XP before i installed vista. I guess i will have to try another ide cable, even though it worked with vista. I have seen stranger things....

I have that same burner in three different machines and they all have worked great. Different IDE cable, double check your DMA settings, and maybe your jumper settings?

Will do with the jumper settings, where do i change the DMA? I remember doing that years ago, but its been a long time 😉.

In addition to what others have suggested, if you have an nvidia chipset motherboard remove their IDE drivers (if you are using them) and just use the standard MS drivers. That solved a similar problem for me.

Yes i am using an nvidia chipset, is there a link that goes into more detail about this?

Well, even though i was able to burn discs in Vista with this IDE cable just last week, and the fact that its only a couple months old, the IDE cable switch worked. I guess i just wanted to do that as a last resort since i went through so much trouble cleaning up my cables, now its messy again.

Hopefully this post will help others in the future, because now i can burn discs (all three brands) without issue.
