Why won't my modem compress text?

I'm running a 3Com 56K ISA hardware modem, which comes with connection monitoring software that shows the current transmission rate. Up until the end of this summer I used AOL 😱, and I seem to remember that mostly text web pages (like these forums) were compressed, and would show up as being DLed at a very high speed (like 100 Kbps) in the monitoring software. At the end of the summer I switched to a real ISP, but ever since then I've never gotten DLs that are any faster than my connection speed. So, I don't think my modem is compressing data anymore. How can I get it to compress stuff? 🙂

it all depends on how your ISP has setup their dial pool and what kind of modems they use (digital). Most ISP run TCP header compression in addition to any DCE (modem) compression.

Make sure you have the right modem drivers installed and set you DTE speed to 115200. otherwise, call the ISP and ask for direction.
