Why won't my HP let me install any OS's??

my sister has a HP Pavillion 4440 and i want to upgrade it to either Win2k or WinXP but when i try to install Win2k it installs a little bit then just goes to a black screen and nothing happens...same thing happens when i try to install WinXP..and the only Win98 CD that seems to work is the one that came with the comp

HA!! I spent many hours on trying to install a different OS my HP4450. HP is stubborn about letting you install anyting other than what came with the machine. Try this: boot to a floppy, run fdisk and remove ALL partions, create a new, then format it. You should be able to run the setup after you boot to the floppy.. OR... boot to the Win2k cd and delete the partitions during the setup process.

ya know i had problems installing win2k on an older pavilion also.. it was a p2-266 on an lx chipset mb. seemed pretty standard to me.. but NT would copy all the files and then just sit there. didn't bother with it too much tho and i just gave up and gave it to a relative.
