Why won't my computer Multitask?

Well, not that it doesn't multitask, but why does everything else come to a screeching halt whenever I have a CD in my DVD/CD burner?

I have an Aopen 16x DVD/CD +/- Burner. If I am installing software, burning a CD, or anything else that requires the use of the drive, it pretty much cripples the rest of my system, I cant open folders, I can't open e-mail, surfing the net slows down, etc...

Its like that Burner possesses my computer and tells it to stop all other actions until it gets done.

Do I have something hooked up wrong? Settings wrong? Bad drive?

The burner is the only optical drive I have and it is hooked up to IDE #1 and is set to master. I am using a new cable.

My system specs are below.

Just drop any X2 in that board... Problem (more than) solved. 😎

I'm sorry a 3000+ should be able to burn and do other things, not everything needs to be solved with a dual core processor.

I also agree with Demon-Xanth that it sounds like DMA is not enabled on the drive.

It sounds like an IO limitation....nothing to do with cpu power here.....

A couple of things...

1) CD/DVD is DMA enabled (as mentioned above)

2) Make sure if HDD is an IDE device the HDD and DVD are on oppposite channels

3) Make sure bios is setup correctly...

To make sure DMA enabled you need to do this in 2 places...make sure in the bios for which you hit esc while bootup of black post screen and then look for a I/O setup menu and make sure DMA is enabled for all channels...

In windows you do this by going to

< control panel > ... < performance and maintenance > .... < system >..... < hardware (tab) > .... < device manager > ...

under IDE/ATAPI ( double click )...

Then under both the primary and secondary make sure all are set to < DMA if available >, and if detected it list DMA mode and not PIO mode...

Yes, because spyware and viruses never cause slowdowns or trouble.

with a cd problem, no they do not. especially a response time thing. Too bad that the services used for the cd aren't virtual memory intensive and are embedded in the startup VM.

Show your rig Fire, as far as i'm concerned i smell b s.

I have had the exact same problem before with a NEC DVD Burner on a 3000+ PC.
Turned out that Windows locked my DVD Burner to PIO Mode 4, and I had to do some registry hacks to enable DMA mode.
