Why won't my computer find my photos?

I have an HP Photosmart M417, and had no problem importing photos from it onto my old laptop. I recently got a new laptop (Pavilion), and now it won't "see" any of the photos from my camera. It finds the video(s) I take with the camera just fine, but not the photos. No software I've tried (Windows or HP software) will see any of the 64 photos I have on my camera right now. What gives?

Have you tried the troubleshooting steps for this error in the camera manual? If not, follow these instructions (particularly steps 2, 3 and 4) and report back with the results: click me

Remove the media from the camera and put it into a reader on your laptop. Should be no trouble - no extra software -Explorer will do it.

As for tethering the camera to the laptop via USB - that also requires a driver for the camera, and is generally a clumsy operation. Use a reader.

I've never understood why some people (some of my friends for instance) insist on grabbing the images off the camera directly. I've never found that to be a good way of transferring images to the PC and only do that as a last resort.

I much prefer using a card reader and usually you can get a very small usb card reader that is easy to carry in your pocket. The single type card readers are usually the size of USB flash drives and very easy to carry around.
