why won't my 600mhz duron go over 650?

i just put my system together today with my week 22 600mhz duron which was factory unlocked. i'm using an MSI KT7 Pro2a and 384mb of PC133 running just fine at 133mhz CAS2. i have a FOP38 with the PCTC pad on. my pro2a will only give me 1.70V as the highest voltage for some reason, and the computer will only post at 650 :( why can't i get any higher?

thanks :)

Pro2a is probably limiting your voltage to a certain limit above the core. I think you can cut and reconnect certain bridges to change the voltage the processor reports, and then the mobo should let you go higher. To me that just sounds weird about the chip. If it will post at 650 then it is unlocked, but I've never heard of a Duron 600 that couldn't do at least 650. I guess it could be possible though. Just to be sure check the heatsink maksing sure it has good contact and I would personally scrap off the pad and add thermal grease.

i'm thinking that i'm going to flash the newer beta BIOS which has a wider range of core voltages and see what i can do with that

toph99:
There are a few things you can do about it.
First, try flashing the latest BIOS.
Secondly, try to use only 1 stick of SDRAM. If it works, add more later.
Third, you probably have to increase the voltage of the CPU. I think you can manually do this on the chip by using the pencil trick on the L7 or something......
Last and foremost, overclocking can only be done at the 1st stage. This means that you should overclock as soon as you receive your CPU. If you run your Duron at 600 MHz for 3 months and then overclock it to 900 MHz, it would refuse to work as it already got 'used to' speed of 600 MHz.
I hope this helps.

limsandy,

O/C'ing can be done at any time, whether the CPU is brand new or years old! Where in the world did you get this information that it must be done when it's new??? It makes NO difference, a CPU does not "get used" to a certain speed. On the other hand, the "burn in" theory (opposite of your's) is also 100% BS...a CPU is either going to run at a certain speed, or it isn't....doing it right out of the box, burning it in for a month, or using it for a year isn't going to make a difference in it's attainable clock speed.

toph99,
I have a Duron 600 Week 22 as well, except that mine was locked. My experience with it is that it would not overclock much at all unless I upped the voltage to 1.85. I don't even recall getting anywhere at default voltage.

After maxing the voltage, I was able to jack it up to 858MHz (8.5 x 101). Rock stable at this setting (over 2 months w/o reboot = rock stable)

I had a Duron 600 that would run stable at 900MHz (1.85V) on an Abit KT7 mobo. I now have a Duron 700 running stable at 1083MHz on the same mobo. (Also 1.85V.)

So, as paulip88 recommended, find a way to increase your voltage if you want to do any serious overclocking. And Dennis is right. Forget that stuff about how you have to overclock when the CPU is brand new or it will get "used" to running at it's default speed. That's absolutely false.
