why won't motherboard recognize 2 sticks of ram?

posting for a friend:

I have an MSI 6533E motherboard (sis 651 chipset). I used to have 1 stick of mushkin 512MB PC2700 in slot 1 (there are 2 slots).

I got a second stick of mushkin 512MB PC2700 and stuck it in slot 2 and the POST still said 512MB when I booted up. So I took out both and put the NEW stick only in slot 1. said 512MB. then the NEW stick only in slot 2. said 512MB.

so both sticks appear to work and both slots appear to work. what's the prob?
why won't it recognize all 1024MB when I have both sticks in?

a limitation of your motherboard. either it is limited to 512mb or it only accept single side ddr which mean one double sided ddr would taken up 2 of the slots.

Says here that board supports 4 memory banks in 2 dimms and up to 2gb memory size. Maybe theres a jumper/bios setting you need to look at.
