Why won't iTunes move?

I have a 2009 MacMini. The iTunes folder is on an external drive.

I bought an i5 MacMini, hooked up the external drive, pointed iTunes to that drive and... nothing. It is like iTunes does not see any of the files on the drive - no music, no apps, no podcasts, no movies, no TV shows - none of it.

Why is iTunes ignoring my files?
What am I missing?

Feel free to walk me through it like I am a five year old.

You might have to add each file, not just the folder. IIRC iTunes does not scan folders for changes, at least it doesn't on Windows. You may have to go in and add all the items. This would be a huge hassle and I hope that isn't the solution, but that is how it is on Windows.

That is not how it is suppose to work. You are suppose to be able to point iTunes to the directory and it SHOULD find the files and use them.

However, I am clearly missing something.

I've always had problems with iTunes library. I don't even use iTunes anymore because removed the only feature I enjoyed. I guess I do update my iPhone with it, but that is it.
