Why won't Excel format the cells the way I want!!

All I want to do is format the border of a cell in the color WHITE because the background is PURPLE. It lets me make the text white but when I choose white for the border color it makes it BLACK instead and when I reopen the format box the color is shown as automatic. I will admit that I am only a casual Excel user so I might be missing something here.

I am really beginning to hate MS products because they never seem to let me do what I want. It would be one thing if they would inform you why they won't let you do something but that is not the case.

EDIT...OK I am convinced that MS really does suck. I keep playing with it and all of a sudden it lets me make one cell in a row have white borders and then when I try the next cell over it reverts back to black. What is going on?

I was able to do it. Format | Cells | Border Tab. Select White, click on the various borders you want to create and click OK.

Works for me. /shrug

1. Select Cells
2. Right-click, select Format Cells
3. Click Border tab
4. Select Line Style, Color: White
5. Click Inside, Outside presets
6. Click OK

I did it exctly the same way and the fist worksheet I did it on it worked. Then I realized I had made a huge error by autoformatting an empty sheet and ended up with a HUGE and unmanageable file. I started over and only formatted the columns I needed and now it won't let me use white borders. I have no idea either.

Thanks
