Why won't car turn off?

My GF's car had a problem yesterday. She turn the car on and then turn the key to off, pull it out the key but the car was still running.

it was making a weird sound on the engine, it ran for about 15 minutes and smoke came from under the engine? Any idea why that would happen? She said it happen in the morning also but it turn off much faster. When she got home from work she tested her car again.

The car just recently had the starter replaced.

edit: its a Toyota Corolla about 2002 model.

I believe that is called "Deiseling". I may be mistaken, but I think it's from the engine running too lean on fuel. Look it up on google.

Edit: Here you go!

Edit v2: Is that a John from Cincinatti quote in your sig?

Thanks i'll let her know.

I think that you should bring it to the dealer. I agree with shocksyde that it's Dieseling, but when you pull the key out, the car's computer supposed to stop the fuel pump(among other things). If the fuel pump were stopped, then there is no fuel for the engine to Diesel. So I think that you might have an electrical/computer issue with the car.

A friend's Corolla used to do that...of course, it was an '80s car well on its way to 300,000 miles. They just popped the clutch to kill it.

Might have leaking fuel injectors, as well.

The ancient AMC I had would diesel because the carb was a pile of crap.

good point, CrackRabbit. I didn't think about the injectors. But it must be a little difficult to start it up once the engine is cold because the fuel pump has to build up pressure.

It was the Starter. It got replaced last week because the car would not start. The shop that put the starter replace it for another one and the problem is gone.
