Why won?t quake2 run in anything but software mode?

Machine:

Soyo 5EMA+ motherboard
AGP TNT2 video card
K6-2 500

Nvidia latest drivers in as of 6/14/01
Latest Via 4in1 as of 6/14/01
Direct X8

Direct x diagnostics test out fine in Direct Draw, Direct 3D, and AGP texturing Acceleration (AGP texturing shows me the spinning box with Direct X logo on it).

In the Nvidia control panel provided with the drives the openGL settings tab has the following: Vsync: always off, Buffer flipping mode: auto select, color depth: always 16bpp, enable buffer region extension: checked, allow dual planes extension to use local video memory: checked, use fast linear mipmap linear filtering: checked, enable anisotropic filtering: unchecked, disable support for enhanced CPU instructions: unchecked.

I can start up quake 2, go down within the video menu, change to default openGL. Resolution is only 640X480. I hit escape to have it send me back to the main menu in that resolution and openGL mode. The screen flickers some and eventually puts me in console mode stating the following:

Loading Ref_gl.dll
Ref_gl version GL 0.01
A device attached to the system is not Ref_gl: : R_Init() ? could not load ?opengl32?

Loading Ref_soft.dll

And it pops me back out to software mode.

The file Ref_gl.dll is 229 kb dated 11/30/98 and is in the Quake 2 directory with the quake2.exe file.

The file opengl32.dll is 683 kb dated 4/30/97 and is in the windows/system directory.

iirc, there were some cases where directX8 messed up the gaming and such... if you feel comfortable, i would suggest uninstalling directx8 and reinstall and older version like directX7 ... but since it may mess up your whole system, please proceed with caution...

here are some resources for uninstalling DX8: link1, link2, or link3

if you decide to go by the way of uninstalling DX8, get DX7 and install it.... i'm not sure if that will help you solve the problem, but that's one of the things yuo can try for now....

again, i will not take responsibility if you messed up your compie following my suggestion... i know several ppl had problems with DX8, but i'm not sure if that's the case with your game....

good luck

Can you play any other Quake2 based OpenGL games? Have you patched Quake2 to 3.20 (I think that's latest)? If you can play other OpenGL games, then something is up with Quake2.

Try out the latest patch, that could solve your problems.

I have done this. The Quake2 is installed from a full retail version. I have patched it and it is currently running version 3.20
