why will my Norton AV 2003 not let me auto protect any more?

I have Norton AV Pro 2003 that will no longer let me keep it in "auto-protect" mode. It says "off" and when i try to click enable nothing happens. My symanntic Live Update is registered till the end of this year so i'm at a loss as to why this has happened? Could it be a virus that has disabled the protection? Any tips or ideas where to start looking to fix this? Thanks anyone who can help!

PS: I am running a full virus scan right now, i'll post shortly the results.

I think I would uninstall and reinstall the program.

If you can download Intelligent Updater on another computer, I would do that and then run it on your first computer before you go on line.
