The games are star wars battlefront 2 and need for speed carbon both officially compatible with windows 8 and 8.1 according to microsoft's compatibility center page.

The games begin to launch then stop. When I have task manager open it shows the games for a few seconds and then they disappear.
Additional Details
*I had windows 8 and i upgraded to 8.1.

Try running in Windows 8 compatibility mode. If that doesn't work, reinstall your video card drivers. If that doesn't work, reinstall the game.

And if that doesn't work, do a clean OS install. I never recommend doing upgrades, as something always goes wrong.

When I first tried Windows 8, I upgraded from Windows 7. Months later, I did a clean install and the difference in performance was noticeable compared to when I upgraded.

Same thing with Windows 8.1. It's always better to clean install than to upgrade.

Thanks for the tips guys. How do I do a clean install? My backup partition has windows 8.0 and I want 8.1. Is there a way to do that without pirating?

To do a clean install, you need to have a Windows 8.1 copy on a disc or USB flash drive. If you don't have it, you can't do a clean install. So procure a copy using whatever means you have, then try it.

The Windows 8.1 upgrade probably replaced your good video drivers with the garbage drivers that Microsoft installs by default.

Download the latest drivers from your video card chipset provider, and give that a try before reinstalling the OS.
