hibernation is not on
I have 64GBs of RAM

<hyneman>Well there's your problem.</hyneman>

http://www.tweakhound.com/windows7/tweaking/7.html

Page file size... In Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 the default size is equal to the amount of memory installed in the machine.

So you've got a 256GB SSD with a formatted capacity of ~ 232GB. 64GB for swap file, and you're down to 168 before you've even installed an OS.

49GB for a Win7 install is actually pretty good. After a couple big Windows updates, I discovered that system restore points alone were taking up 20GB of storage space on my 90GB SSD.

He already said that he had switched off the swap file.

OP, when you said that hibernation is not on, have you checked that hybrid sleep is disabled (I wouldn't recommend disabling it, but it would explain a large amount of the discrepancy)?

My three year old Win7-64 partition is only 36.5GB (my apps and data are on another partition). About half a gig of that is my AppData folder I think.

System restore points use a percentage of the partition's capacity (10% I think by default).

It would have been helpful if the OP had answered my other questions.

If you look at Disk Management in Computer Management, does it show your partition is using the whole drive?

Get a utility that visually shows you how much space is in the various folders.

Then you'll just easily look for the ginormous folder to see where all the space is being taken.

But right now, you are searching for something in a dark room. This utility will turn on the light so you may see my son...

windirstat is handy for seeing what's taking up what on an SSD.

I'm sorry but people like you really get me going. You have come to a technical forum to seek assistance or a solution to a problem you're having. People have been good enough to give up their time and help you with your problem and you've not done any of the requests made or posted screenshots of any of the utilities you were asked to run.

You've then just stuck in a different drive and carried on blissfully ignorant of the actual problem so you have learned nothing from this should you ever have a similar issue in the future.

What a waste of everybody's time.

It's not that bad - as i see it we all benefit from the exchange. The old saying is true . . you can lead a horse to water, but . . .

Cheers!

Eh, 40 replies in the thread "Looking to downgrade from i920 (lower power usage)" and no word from the OP yet. I am expecting a similar response. That's why I usually only post once per OP post, but there are exceptions.

It's the internet. It happens.

lol. Spent nearly an hour the other week making two posts providing the OP with some screenshots taken from a similar system I had access to along with some technical information and then the OP dropped the thread. Another user within the thread even bumped it asking how it went and nothing. I've seen the user online twice since then and you just think "yeah, thanks for that".

hey at least the OP reported back with a solution (well, kind of a solution anyway). a lot of people wouldn't have bothered with that.
