Why we really really hate Sallie Mae

To pay for some of my wife's education we had to take out some additional loans from Sallie Mae to cover our costs. It amounted to 5 separate loans (for 5 semesters over 2 years) totaling just a few thousand dollars and all at the same interest rate. I cosigned the loans for my wife.

She graduated and now all 5 loans are in repayment (the last one just started repayment), all due on different dates. No big deal, thats what our bill calendar is for. We take the payment stubs out of the bill, write the check with the loan number on the top and send it in. The money was debited from the checking account and so we thought it was paid.

Wrong. I get a call from them saying she was late on a payment. Minor hassle, but I pull up the checking account - point out that the check was cashed for loan xxx-xxxx-xx on this date. They tell me that the payment had been applied to a different loan of hers. I ask why since we sent in the payment stub corresponding to the correct loan. I was told it was because we didn't write the account number on the check

Me: "The nice thing about Flagstar bank is that they have an image of the check cashed and it does in fact have the account number on top."

Oh, sure thing sir. We will get this taken care of right away. No penalties.

Me: "Can we consolidate the loans?"

Won't be a problem - we just have to wait for this payment to re-process before we can do that. Call us back in 2-3 days.

Fine. whatever.

Two days later I get another call. "The required payment is late for this loan."

Me: "I think I should speak to your supervisor now."
Person: "Why?"
Me: "Because I don't think you want to be on the receiving end of this complaint."

I had a very long conversation with the supervisor. He also tried to tell me that the payment was applied wrong because we either didn't put the account number on the check or it was the wrong check. I explained to him about the Flagstar check image. He relented and said he would take care of it.

Me: "What is your fax number?"
Supervisor: "Why?"
Me: "I am going to fax a copy of the check that you cashed with the account number on it over."
Supervisor: "I don't think that is necessary."
Me: "Oh I think it is. Also, I want you to consolidate the loans."
Supervisor: "We can't do that until the payment is reprocessed."

I eventually brow beat him into doing it then - since they obviously can't take our payments properly.

So now our payments are due once a month for all the loans.

The 3/14 payment date comes. We go online and make our payment

Fast forward to today. We check our checking account. -$235

What??!! I don't think we have EVER done that. Its about $400 off what our checkbook says. We are very confused. We peruse our account activity.

We noticed we paid Sallie Mae on 3/14 (Edit: we paid the sum total of the amount due for all 5 loans)

Sallie Mae takes another payment of the same size on 3/17 :|
Sallie Mae takes another payment of the same size on 3/16 :| :|
Sallie Mae takes another payment of the same size on 3/18 :| :| :|

We NEVER EVER authorized them to do any type of automatic bill payment. We certainly didn't pay our bill 4 FUCKING TIMES! I am so pissed its not even funny. Its a damn good thing there isn't an office around here - else you'd be reading about me and my rampage in tomorrows paper.

Now we have to call them, get our payments back, get them to reimburse us for the $71 dollars in over draft fees we incurred and seriously bitch them out about invading our checking account and stealing from us. God help them if this EVER happens again

:| :| (I don't think there are enough 'mad' emoticons to properly portray my anger)

Cliffs:
Sallie Mae sucks
We try to make proper payments
Sallie Mae gives us the finger and takes whatever they fucking please
Fuck you Sallie Mae

So they are charging us the total of all 5 loans 5 times a month? Our payments went up 500%? Not to mention we never gave them permission to take the money

Another satisfied Sallie Mae customer here. IIRC I had 4 separate loans with them which eventually got lumped into one monthly payment. When the loans went into repayment I setup automatic withdraw from my checking. The only time I visit their site is around tax time for my interest statement.

Nicely done.

I got on my dad's case a few times about chewing out CSRs. They're just some person working at a crappy job, and no matter how much you yell at them or belittle them, they're not going to solve massive, systemic problems in their company. They're going to try to figure out a way of hanging up on you without getting fired.
Supervisors, well, they're only slightly higher up on the food chain, but they've at least got some level of power, and they were willing (stupid enough?) to take that job position.

That's what I was going to suggest. No paper for them to deal with; hopefully their IT people are more competent than their check processors.

Sallie Mae really sucks. They make "mistakes" like that all the time. They also apply payments to the loans with the lowest rates first sometimes when you specify that the payment is going to the loan with the highest rate.

Oops it's actually at 1.625%.

What index were your loans based on that you were able to consolidate at such a low rate? Mine were based on the 91-day Tbill auction held on the last week of May, and the rate reset each July. Right before the July 2005 rate reset, I locked mine in at the effective rate from 2004, which IIRC was the lowest ever in recent history. Mine are only consolidated at 2.6%, although I get a 1% discount after 48 on-time payments.

Anyone have recommendations for consolidating private loans? I'm still paying $800/mo to Sallie Mae at 10%--WHY???? BTW, I tried 3x to consolidate with Citi, twice with a private lender (and twice with Sallie Mae themselves)--each time I could never get better than 8% and that was only after extending 15 years to 30 years.
