Latest battlefield game is my benchmark. If I didn't upgrade my 1080p monitor, I would have had my GTX670's a lot longer than I did. People were getting 780's, 780ti's, 980's and I didn't care at all. Then I increased my resolution and upgraded to 980ti's, because if not I would have been suffering in low FPS hell.

I've actually stopped upgrading for quite some time since I most play games a couple of years old or WoT or WoW. Next upgrade will be a hdr monitor and gpu, but with the slow advancement in that area, it could take a couple of years.

My old HD7770/Phenom II X4 was way too slow to play Warhammer Total War at a decent speed. Runs beautifully on my new system.

If Star Citizen came out next year and it was well reviewed, I'd upgrade whatever I needed to for my system to run it well at 1080p...

That's not going to happen tho

my upgrade path was E6600 + 6600GTS, then GTX280(eBay,$50), then 7750. new CPU with 4650k and GTX 770. Conroe to Haswell. do we really upgrade too fast?

I upgrade it seems every year or two on the desktop side. Laptop was more important in the past, but having to carry two laptops for work really killed a separate gaming one.

I upgrade because I like to, not usually for any specific game. Sometimes I am more on top of the recent stuff. Other times I let it slide. I was using a 2600K for a LONG time before upgrading to my current rig in my sig using the 6600K. Skipping 7K series right now. Although I am in the mood to switch out my case as I want to put in a nice big water cooling setup and don't really want to modify the current case I have. The case I have is a very nice case that I've used for like 10 years now, but it doesn't really support water cooling setups all that well.

I like to be able to play all my games maxed if possible with 1440p and no drops below 60 fps, I'll wait under AMD release a decent card that is at least 70% faster than my 1070 then I'll probably upgrade the whole system. I'm sure it'll last me another 2-4 years.

What are you doing with 7D2D? The game works fine on my modest system. Even worked fine with my old GTX260. I've started using mods and they don't run as good but they're still very playable. *oops are you playing @ 4k?*

I recommend valmods Classic Horde Survival

My specs
Q9650
8GB
Asus 280x

No mods for 7D2D yet but with the in-game settings cranked at 4k, I get a little slowdown at times. Not sure if that is due to alpha/beta game code that would slow down on any hardware or because I need more GPU grunt.

I only upgrade when a game comes out that is made virtually unenjoyable on anything but medium graphics at 1080p.
