I own 2hard drives 1 IBM 4.3 GB in my old computer and 1 40gb Maxtor diamond max+ in my new computer. The old computer's hard drive is 5400RPM! And The new one is 7200RPM THAT SUCKS! So it's only 25% faster but it's 10x as big! That means hard drives slowed down like $#@$# no wonder it takes me 2 hours to defragment my new one and it only took me 20 min to do the same to my old one!

Think about it, buddy...

10x the size, 1/3 faster spindle speed. So reduce the 20 minutes by 1/3, to get ~14 minutes, multiply that times 10. 140 minutes, roughly. 2 hours isn't bad at all.

It was upgraded. The spindle speed is faster, resulting in faster read/write times. Otherwise it would have taken you 200 minutes to defrag, which is over three hours.

but what you're forgetting is that on those 3 platters, the newer drives crams in a lot more info than the 4.3gig does, so really, it'll p!mp your old drive.
BTW: 40gig's is a lot to defrag!

With a 40g HD, you HAVE to partition that bad boy.

It makes defrages faster, you have control over where things go, and you can backup or image each partition if you want.
