Why was my SB Live card screaming at me?

I put together my system last weekend and used the SB Live Value card I had used successfully for the last year. It seemed to work ok for a day or so as I tinkered with settings to get my system running stable. All of a sudden as I re-booted for the 100th time, just as windows appears, I hear this screaming sound just like a smoke detector! After I came down from hitting the ceiling I hit the power switch to shut everything down. I thought I killed my computer. I soon realized that whenever a sound event happened, my soundcard just produced a high pitched tone. The sound that had freaked me out was when the thunder sound plays as windows loads.
Anyway, I took my card out and tried it in a different slot and so far so good.
Has anybody come across this before?
