Why was I banned and not others?

First, I would like to state that this is NOT a moderator callout, whatever that is defined as at this point in time. (And I was told to post issues here....so...we'll see how that holds up.)

I have an issue with this thread:

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=38&threadid=2183547

The third page where we have the following statement:

I misunderstood the OP and was presumptuous about what I did understand. I admit it.

I guess garbage collection is different up here in Canuckistan. if my neighbour put a bag next to mine on garbage day, I wouldn't think it was a big deal... but if it was there for a week then of course that would suck. That said, I can put 100 bags out there every week if I want to. So I apologize for all the garbage woes you seem to have, OP. sucks.

I do own my own property though, Wheezer. I wonder which one of us is the n00b, in comparison. ;)

Translation: Yes, I AM a clueless yet arrogant asswipe. But I own a house! So, obviously, I'm kewl, hyuck, hyuck.

I was banned for a month for calling someone "stupid". That is all. Apparently that was a personal attack and unacceptable, even after the person I said this to had insulted me. I didn't even directly call the person stupid. I said his post was stupid. This is exactly what I posted which was worthy of a ban in the eyes of the moderators here:

"Wow, you just posted a completely stupid reply. How does that make you feel?"

Is this now okay?

Because what I see above is a personal attack from an Elite Senior Moderator. He calls someone an "arrogant asswipe". This is, to anyone of even mild intelligence, a much more harsh personal attack than just calling someones reply "stupid".

Why is this person not banned for a month? Why are there no comments in his post threatening to ban? I'm sure he did not get a PM telling him if he does it again he's banned.

I could probably scour the forums and find plenty of personal attacks far worse than a simple hey your reply was stupid, yet I am sure that nothing was done in those situations.

I also wonder how long this topic will stay here. Last time I posted an actual forum issue it was deleted and I got banned for posting the issue. Well I think that's why...there was no other reason ever given, and the issue was never addressed.

Just because you state this isn't a Mod Call Out doesn't mean it isn't. The proper procedure when dealing with Moderators issues is to contact Derek Wilson. Now that this has been explained to you I will lock this thread as it serves no other purpose.

Okay I've got to pull a bunch of info, as that brings up other issues.

Here is the thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=38&threadid=2171392

Here is what was said:

Wow, you just posted a completely stupid reply. How does that make you feel?

Vacation for one month for insulting another member without provocation.

This is the last ban before it is permanent. You have been warned over and over and over, and you still insult and attack AT members. This is it, Odin. Last chance.

Very confusing as I do not recall being warned "over and over and over" regarding attacking anyone. I inquired about this statement, and got the following incidents back in response:

1/21/08 - 1 Wk - Mod callout after being requested to cleanup post

I stated in this thread that a mod wanted me to edit a post. I didn't say any names..just a mod asked to have it changed. Apparently that's an evil thing to say. I didn't do something like post "Hey a mod wanted me to change this, but screw that!" Anywway, no insulting/attacking here.

3/14/08 -- Warned not to thread crap in GeekB's goody threads again, or vacation --

This brings up yet another issue. I can't find the thread as I believe it was deleted. I, along with others, had pointed out some stuff regarding GeekBabe and her goody threads which was entirely legitimate. It was done in the manner in which tons of other members get called on stuff and it had NOTHING to do with the fact that she was a moderator. However since she was, I got a "stop posting or else" PM about it. I've done the same exact thing to other "normal" members, as well as many other memebers have done the same thing, and it is accepted. It becomes "Ownage of the Year" threads and crap like that - and there are never any warnings in my PM's about those threads started by "normal" members. This is a double standard, and apparently that is a bad thing to point out. Perhaps you could say it was "attacking a member" - but since posts of this type are done by so many others, it is perceived to be okay.

3/23/08 Mod callout 1 week.

Here I had posted something about a thread being locked and a ban given and I saw the same type of thread posted by a moderator and it was just left alone. I can't find the original stuff...but anyway. There was no insulting involved here. I didn't even see it as a moderator call out - which by the way is not (last I checked - and I read through every word) outlined in the rules anywhere on the site. Maybe it was a callout...I was finally told to put issues into the forum issues forum - which I had done previously and all that happened in that case was I got banned for doing it and my thread was deleted and I was never told why.

3/29/08 - One month for insulting another member.

So after all that, still, I had no answer as how I was warned "over and over and over" about insulting members.

I know that I have been banned several times - some of them I will freely admit were deserved. But most I've never even had any real idea why in the first place, and just get the cold shoulder when asking what I did, and to this day I still have no idea and nobody ever gives a straight answer.

I know that I am not well liked by some of the moderators because I am not some pushover and I question authority when I see double standards in things that have happened. But how can you expect members to follow rules that those enforcing them don't even follow?

Hell, I was once warned for "trolling in a Nikon thread" in the camera forums - which was absolutely RIDICULOUS! (Thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...2086130&enterthread=y). My post was deleted. All I probably did was just call a Nikon a "Noink" which is very well understood by photographers as a friendly jab between users of the various brands - I had called it that plenty of times over there before without incident, but all of a sudden it's trolling. Nobody cared - nobody said anything to me or replied and seemed offended at all. But I get a warning about that? Just ridiculous things like that end up added to some list of warnings? Seems a bit crazy to me.

I agree with you, I think that 1 month ban was totally uncalled for.

Thanks for finding that thread. The responses in that thread are no different than those in "ownage of the year" threads and the like, where various members "own" the OP, etc. It is only frowned upon since the OP happened to be a mod.

The only reason I even said anything in that thread was because I had seen SO MANY posts and threads of hers just bragging and boasting "OH LOOK WHAT I WON!!!" If I pulled that kind of crap, you'd bet that plenty of other people would be all over me about it, and rightly so.

And as I said - that is the only thing that I can think of which could actually be considered an "attack" for which I was warned (and if you read the thread, you will see that I did leave it alone after that warning). There have been no warnings regarding attacks/insults "over and over and over" as stated in the month ban edit in my post. That is one of the issues. So yes that *could* be considered an attack and I conceeded that, however you will find much worse in plenty of places, in "ownage of the year" type threads, etc. and you don't see warnings like that in them. It's not like I was calling her a b***h or anything - I was pointing out some actual issues which were also seen as character flaws by others as well. Shoot - that kind of thing could help some people realize something about themselves...but anyway I digress.
