Why Vista won't suck

I've been using it for the last couple of days, and it's been freaking awesome. Install was fast and stupid easy (which is great... people won't need to waste $150 to have somebody reinstall their OS because the 'tech' was too lazy or dumb to fix the problem... they can just do it themselves).

I just love the way the new explorer and 'computer' (previously My Computer) works. And of course the new GUI. But what my favorite thing so far has been the new Media Player... this thing just rocks. I can't wait until Vista is released and i can build my server/media center on this.

The beta has been buggy (kaspersky wasn't working entirely)... and last night, i completely fubar'd the entire OS by trying to install alcohol. I mean COMPLETELY fvcked up. I can't even go into safe mode.

It's beta. There's bound to be issues like that. And that doesn't affect performance in any way. It's not like it throttles the speed because it can't label the CPU correctly.

It's looking like a late summer, fall release. From what I've read (and I'm not throwing out crap like most people do), I'm guessing October.

Nice so far. I will pick up where I left off when I get back from class. I'm getting excited.

Some stuff I care about, some I don't...
Doubtful that I'd shell out money for it, but if my company keeps giving me freebies, why not 🙂

People don't seem to get that every version of Windows has improved on itself, and I have no doubt Vista will do the same. A complete kernel rewrite can't hurt.

Am I the only one this morning not able to get to the extremetech article? It just keeps timing out. I'd like to read it, if someone wants to copy and paste it to me via PM.

Thanks for the link, interesting read.

In all fairness, I'm happy with my OS at the moment, 2kpro lol, and haven't upgraded for a while as it's all just rehashes. Although, as this is finally the next generation Microsoft OS, it looks like it will be worthwhile.

Would I be correct in assuming that a new gfx card will work with DX10 and things? Or are these fundamental changes going to mean that even a cheap card that's been optimised for DX10 will dominate an 'old' dinosaur 7900 for example?

Do you include ME in this statement? 😛

Great review...

I'm running 5308 on my main box right now, and it's been running fine... a few glitches at first with my nVidia graphics card, but it's still in BETA, so that's just fine... 🙂

To the people currently using it ?

How does overall system snappiness and speed feel vs Windows xp ?

Same ?

Faster ?

Slower ?

It's really irrelevant at this point since code optimizations have not been completed on Vista yet.

It would seem theoretically, ANY DX10 card should be better because of the way the standards are forming. DX10 will require a certain set of features and if a card doesn't have even one of these, it can't cut it, it won't be labeled DX10 compliant. It's not as lenient as before, especially with DirectX 9 where many DX9 "compliant" cards can't truly handle DirectX 9.

DX10 will require SM4.0 and specific requirements that would make it pretty much impossible to have a low end card that's ****** in games, I'd think. The low end cards of the future may not be DX10 compliant until they can meet the requirements.

But it's mostly speculation, it's still very far away and I'm not even sure DX10 is finalized yet.

Nice article , but maybe overly optimistic. What I care about most is customizability. The ability to make it look and run like I want it without any stuff I don't want.

The interface seems way to Mac from what I have seen so far. Good and simple for basing click and go usage, but if you want to do something else good luck.

And the new security sounds nice, I just hope it is security from malware and not from the user or administrator to help Microsoft.

Has there been a lot of compatibility issues with current games and applications with the current build of Vista? Obviously driver support and such is limited, but how about just off-the-shelf program support?

Slower than XP. But that's to be expected since it's beta.

What do you mean?

Driver support was surprisingly good. It installed all drivers for my iXPS2 laptop except wireless and bluetooth. Software-wise was both hit and miss. Firefox, word, were just fine. Kaspersky would scan and clean, but just wouldn't do real-time protection... and would fubar the side dock. I installed Civ 4 just fine, but didn't actually get to play it... i was installing Alcohol so i could mount a mini-image instead of using my DVD, but installing Alcohol completely messed up the system. BSOD, and couldn't even get into safe-mode without it BSODing.
