We have the eight amendment for a reason, believe me he will be getting some "eye for an eye" if you know what I mean.
Put him in the general prison population. it'll save mad taxpayer money compared to death, and it's completely unappealable. Broomstick rape until his intestines are mush. Even though they're criminals, they aren't all THAT bad and tend to do very, very naughty things to child molestors.
Torture then death...
Good idea, as long as there is the stipulation that if some innoent person is convicted, tortured and killed that the convicting jury be found immediatly guilty of murder and suffer the same fate.

You need to clarify "running a train on somebody". Even if I was a victim of a horrible crime, death would be enough for me.
I hate hearing about such heinous crimes as much as the next ATOT'er, but people need to think about consequences rationally instead of emotionally. Would I love to beat his ass? Hell yeah! But state-sanctioned torture? I don't think so. Nor state-sanctioned execution. Not because this monster doesn't deserve it, but because some day, an innocent person is going to found guilty of a crime he or she didn't commit. One innocent life taken away by the state is one too much, even if it means 99 or 999 or 9999 evil, guilty lives are allowed to continue to exist in a jail somewhere.
And if you don't agree with that - think about this: What if your mother / father / wife / husband / gf / bf / sister / brother was wrongly accused of some crime, found guilty, and executed? When you're standing there at the funeral with your friends & family, are you going to say to yourself "Well, even though he/she died, there's a thousand less bad people in jail because they died for crimes they (probably) committed..."
I think I've said this once, but don't give him the chair, just let him loose in the general population of any prison, and tell all inmates what he's in for.
I don't agree with the OP title because the homeless man was probably mentally ill, seeing as how almost 100% of homeless people are (according to a huge volume of research that a homeless study project that my mom used to work for got). mentally ill people are already tortured internally every second of their lives.
I think it would be much more contructive to provide conselling for both the homeless man and the 8yo.

Who says these people know anything about a civilized society?

I was just reading a Heinlein book, in which there is a world where "an eye for an eye" is taken literally. If you were to get drunk, run into someone with your car, and cause their leg to have to be amputated, then you would be staked down to the road, run over, and have an ambulance crew amputate your leg before taking you to the hospital to recover. Crime was low, and drivers were careful.

The way things get sensationalized so quickly it wouldn't take much for a totally innocent person to be the 'guilty' one in a situation like this.
