why the terrible battery life?

GNex (4.2.2 OS) on VZW but I got a new phone so this isn't on the network anymore. I put it on airplane mode and sleep overnight from 100% battery and this is what I wake up to.

Phone idle eats up over 30% of a 2200mAh (extended) battery.

I used to think it was mostly the Screen and usually if you use the phone that would take up the most juice, but this is pretty ridiculous. I just keep it around so the kids can play games on it but it looks like I'll just have to turn it off completely when not being used for a while.

In contrast I now have a Note 3 (4.3 OS) and even though it's got a 3200mAh battery and is on the network, the suckage overnight is nowhere near as bad. The % used hardly moves. Is it that the phone itself is optimized better? I'm so glad I upgraded devices and no longer worried about battery life. I can actually use my 4G a lot now without having to worry about battery.

Something is wrong. With my Gnex on airplane it would last 2-3 days before dying. I'd do a factory reset.

Factory reset the phone and see if it gets better. I had 2 gnex gsm versions and a friend had a Verizon one and those phones all sucked with battery life. I found a fix somewhere where it puts the phone into deep sleep when the screen is off. The phone I had didn't go into a deep sleep when it was of and my battery life was bad just like that

OK, but before I do that, does it at any point need to be on a cell network during a fresh load?

And along the same lines, since it's not an active phone anymore, is there any way to get the latest OS if VZW ever distributes it? Or will I just have to root? Can it be rooted without a cell network?

You can connect it to your local/home wireless network to get updates and games and whatever else. You don't need to have it active on the Verizon network to do that.

Ok so after a reset I woke up to 89% under the same scenario. Thanks.

Should I hold off on rooting to 4.4 since people are still reporting issues for the GNex? Any potential benefit for my use such as it being faster/more responsive or longer battery?

I don't know what you mean "rooting to 4.4". You root whatever OS is on your phone, and you upgrade to different versions of that OS... but you don't "root to" versions of anything

Do you mean upgrade to 4.4, and then root it? What problems are people having (ie: are they with 4.4 or the root method)?

^ sorry meant rooting for 4.4. VZW only allows 4.2.2 currently. And the only way to upgrade then is to root and apply ROMs correct? Sorry never done it before. Random issues I read were freezes and endless cycling with 4.4 on the VZW GNex.

The Galaxy S2 and GNex are relatively similar phones, both made by Samsung, and my S2 idled about 24 days on one charge while I was trying to sell it. 2-3 days to dead in airplane mode suggests something is misbehaving, downloading Better Battery Stats and/or Wakelock Detector might be a good idea.

I have a GNexus on Verizon(my second line) that is rooted and running 4.4.2 without issues. It doesn't help or hurt the battery life. If you're alright with the battery now I'd just leave it. I don't think you are missing anything.
