Why the phobia of buying Geil ddr memory?

I've noticed posted on this board a few times to stay away from Geil memory, never a reason listed. Now, I just bought a kt333 board, and in looking for pc2700 memory I've noticed that it gets VERY pricey very quickly. However, several retailers have Geil listed, and it seems to be in most cases a good margin cheaper then other brands. I did some google review searching, and all of the reviews I've seen have been very, very positive, saying it runs faster and much more stabily then other types of memory.

The only thing I found against it was on newegg... under user reviews, the 512mb has a post saying that the memory is overclocked pc2100, and it references anandtech. Whats the deal? Is Geil a good brand, or should I stray away?

PS: I have a Soyo Dragon ultra platinum, and won't be doing any overclocking, just running it at 333mhz.

Who? Ive never heard of Geil before. Ive never really looked past the majority of large firms and a few small ones including Spectek.

Alright, that explains it then. I wasn't aware that the two companies were related... and yes, I've heard several, several complainst about OCZ. Guess I'll just fork up a few extra bucks and get some corsair ram. Thanks guys.

Also if you look at the used/refurbished section at newegg, the only DDR RAM they have is made by Geil. That's enough to warn me off them.

Edit:

Well at least it was last time I checked:eek:

Because they hand pick it instead of machine pick.
Labor cost is very expensive in the US.
:)
For computer beginners who don't know how to overclock and are willing to pay preimum on pre-tested overclockable components.
Do they really test it, do they really use good overclockable ram chips on high quality pcb, can they stay in the business long enough to provide liftetime warranty, etc. is another question.

it's terrible memory.
here's my story.
i just got a new p4 setup, to replace my athlonxp 1800+ rig.

i got an epox 4pea+ mainboard and 1.8a to overclock like mad.
i had success early on with this setup, but today has been HEADACHES... it wont' start sometimes, other times it gets half way through booting windows and reboots, and upon power down and re-start it works FINE... and then other stupid sporatic errors.. this made me really think the p4 world was crap (have been AMD for a while now) and i was getting fed up.. i had picked up the memory and the cpu from a place locally and bought the motherboard from directron.com... i ended up switching the memory out of my p4 rig and taking the good samsung ddr from my athlon rig, i put the memory from my (what i thought to be crap) P4 rig into my Athlon and while it was booting got a stop error.. never had this before, ever!!! guess what the RAM is? PC2700 GEIL!!!!!! now my athlon rig is running like crap, it booted this time, but it took 3 reboots for it to come up all the way so i can use it.. now i'm afraid it's going to die through the night like my p4 did... i came home from the bar about an hour ago and i turned on my monitor.. screen was black... haha, just great... just about put the board and cpu up for sale on ebay over my other machine... SO pissed... bu after the swap it's perfectly fine and running at 2.7ghz again.

DO NOT BUY GEIL MEMORY... i am going to RMA that crap as soon as i can and get some more of the Samsung stuff.
for the product to work to the point where sometimes it's fine, and other times it simply messes up the entire system, says alot for it's quality... normally you instantly know when your RAM is gone or bad.... with this crap your computer just seems to run like junk.. it's really ass memory... stay away at all costs!!

Yeah well it freaking BLOWS!
I am going to have a word with my dealer about this (got it from a supplier) and tell them they should stop carrying this memory at all costs.

They should only carry Corsair and Kingston valueram.
Corsair for overclocker, valueram for non-overclocker,
pretty enough.

We get Spectek (division of Micron) Kingston, Samsung, sometimes even real Micron (some of these are labeled under the "Azen" name.)
