Ok, so I'm going to be bashed for this...BUT.

I was watching the Animatrix, and "The Second Renaissance", part two. The part where mankind tries to use nukes against the machines. But, the voiceover says "The machines were invunerable to the heat and radiation from a nuclear blast."

Ok. First off, NO METAL WE HAVE can survive a nuke at blast point. 300,000 degrees celsius. Even if someone disagrees with me, like saying "They might be made of ceramics..." then that brings me to point two

WE KNOW from the later films that EMP kills the machines. Therefore, when a nuke goes off, the EMP generated from a nuclear blast MUST kill the machines.

Just thought I'd bring that up.

I never got past the concept of using humans as an energy source. I can see Newton shaking his head in disbelief now....

I have Matrix Revolutions playing in the background and I have lost interest about 30 minutes in. Talk talk talk...action for 2 minutes... more talk talk talk... blah blah blah... love story... talk talk and more talk. I just wanted closure... are there cliffs notes for movies ?

The 3 alternate lives movies that came out all at the same time were The Matrix, The 13th Floor, and Dark City. They were all excellent in their own way. The concept of our lives being a complete lie is nothing new, never will be, but that doesn't make these movies any less original.

You people need to watch the entire first two seasons of the 'Big O' anime.

They say in the first movie "this, combined with a form of fusion...."

So they have fusion power too. I think the human energy part is a cool idea, but I agree it doesn't make much sense.

No no, that was all a lie. They didn't harvest people for their energy. They harvested them for their brain power. Basically networked them all into one huge biological computer.

To what end? The humans didn't seem to be solving any problems. Unless you feel that they were 5 minutes away from finding the question to the answer '42'

No they use them for energy. The primary source of energy for the machines had been solar power, and somehow man found a way to completely darken the skies so they could not get it anymore. The machine city was too large to be supported by any other form of energy, so they have massive farms of people, millions of people. I don't know how they get energy from humans, but it has to be something that is constant, otherwise there'd be no reason to let them live full lives. Body heat maybe?

Most movies suck or just plain out boring. If you have a lot of free time, they can be enjoyable but who does this day?

You don't understand. The most basic laws of physics dictate that humans CANNOT EVER be used as a form of energy. Simply put, we will always be lossy, and so we will always take in more energy than we put out.

Now, if you had a huge stockpile of humans, and you found a way to burn us, you could get energy out, but that would be deceptive, because we did not actually give you energy, just store it for a while, having taken it in as food. if you had to nurture us from birth, it would be a net loss for you. If you could farm us (see Stargate Atlantis, surprisingly), where we got out energy from the sun, you could get a net gain, but it wouldn't even be as much as you'd get from using huge farms of solar panels.

If the machines are so technologically advanced, and they need power, they'd do best to put huge farms of solar panels in orbit and to beam the power to groundstations via microwave.

No, you didn't listen. That is all a lie. It is impossible to get energy from Humans. Besides, they could just as easily build nuclear power plans (or fusion, if they had it), instead of some sort of human power plants.

The only obvious use for humans was to use them as a biological computer. The "power" thing doesn't work, doesn't play out no matter how you look at it.

I agree with you 100%, but the computer thing doesn't play out either. If you have the sophistication to build the matrix, why would you need to use humans as computers? The fact is, we're not very reliable as math machines. Even if we were, you bould build a better computer by simply using the matrix servers (whatever), themselves, as they must be incomprehensibly powerful. The only reason to use humans in a simulation like that is to gain a better understanding of us, which seems diametrically opposed to their purpose. Ultimately, the only reasonable course of action is to chalk it up to technically unaware writers/producers.

Hate to break it to you, but this is an attempt to be 'hard' science fiction -- that is, to make sense.

There's technology out there right now that can self-sustain itself on it's own energy output, and you can input ANYTHING into it to produce energy. They can put in old computers and produce oil.

People make fake diamonds that are basically the same thing as real diamonds. You can tell the difference because they are too perfect.

Teleportation, as seen in Star Trek, is real and has been done.

THE EARTH IS ROUND.

Guess what, everything you thought you knew will be proven wrong tomorrow. That's why science fiction is great. People come up with some fantastic tech we'll supposedly have in the future, and some braniac is inspired to actually make it happen. There is seemingly no limit.

You really have no clue scientifically, do you?

1. You are mistaken. Show me any REAL WORLD technology with 100% efficiency and I will show you a fool. Perfect artifical diamonds have nothing to do with this. Teleportation has been done on a quantum mechanical scale, using spooky properties of quantum physics, and there is NO evidence that such things could ever be scaled up to the macro scale.

Here's the thing, the 'facts' that were proven wrong by science were based in nothing but fairy stories. Science has often had it's theories modified, even drastically, but the law of conservation of energy is not one of them.

That said, there is IMO, no known limit to human ingenuity, and I would not rule out FTL travel, or 'Teleportation' but you seem to think it will magically appear in the next two years. Both those things are governed by much less simple rules than conservation of energy and we might find 'tricks' around laws, but we would not be breaking them.

It sounds to me like Sci-fi is a religion to you. Nothing more nothing less.
