why the $*#% is my Dell still in "boxing"? (answers inside)

I ordered a Dell Latitude D600 on Friday night (8pm or so), and it was finished building and testing when I woke up on Saturday morning.

However, it has been stuck at the "boxing" stage since saturday! :| I ordered some certified memory from Dell (it was on sale) on Sunday, and it got here this morning. wtf?!

So I went to support.dell.com forums, and I found out that my machine was built/tested in Malaysia and has to be flown to Tenessee before it can ship out. The "boxing" stage takes about 3 days according to the Dell moderator.

Arg.

Just a rant. Dell should be more specific about what the "boxing" stage is, and state that it involves some internal transport in the company from a manufacturing center to a distribution center.

SERIOUSLY? so not only dell provides support from india now they not made in USA?

All the big manufactures (Gateway and Dell) have had their laptops made from other countries for a long time.

None of dells laptops are made here. and neither are Gateways, etc. They are all build overseas.

Far as I know, Dell has a "Just In Time" manufacturing process. Every time an order is placed, they order the parts needed from the dealers and assemble the computer to fit the order. That way they don't have units sitting in warehouses that are eating up income and they can alter their configs of the machines with no worry of exhasting the current storehouse of Video cards, or whatever.

So, in a sense, you are right....they don't have the parts of the computer you in stock. But, this probably explains why its assembled, imaged, and burned-in in Malaysia. They are probably getting their parts directly from the manufacturers.
