Why the iPad is great and most other tablets out there suck

Below is a bunch of thoughts that may sound like fanboyism, but really, I am just expressing how I feel about this device, so feel free to ignore if any of it offends you...

So yeah.. I was one of those people that bashed anything Apple. I'd say things like "If you use a Mac you're just a "user" and you dont know anything about computers", "You're Steve Job's bitch", "You have no originality and you use the same shit other people do like a sheep in a heard", and many many other things...

That is until I got an iPad. Pure and simple it blows all competition out of the water. And this is just an iPad. Not an iPad 2.

Why is it so awesome, you may ask.. Well the reason is, IT'S GOT A 10 INCH SCREEN and manages to be a quality device at the same time. Show me another tablet that does both of these things at the same time. There is no other device like this out there!

But... but... but... The Nook Color is cheap, and it can be rooted...
Who cares?! The rooting doesn't give it all that much compared to the iPad. And the damn 7 inch screen?! Don't even get me started on that one. Yeah.. off course someone will say.. "I dont care about the screen size - 7 inch is plenty for me. Yeah right. You're just telling yourself that so you feel less jealous of those that own the iPad.

But... What about the Samsung Galaxy Tab? Suuuurrrreeee.... 7 inch screen?! Sorry, but NO. But.. but.. There is a 10 inch Galaxy Tab now!!! Yeah... HAVE YOU LOOKED AT THE PRICE?! I can get a used iPad in good condition for less than half that, which will STILL be better in many ways. Does android offer such a huge library of games? Apps? No. Don't even try. You will lose.

Archos released a 10 inch screen tablet trying to prove something with a low price of $180. But it's pathetic processing power, speed, and features, just dont stand up to the scrutiny.

Any time someone brings up a tablet which is supposedly just as good as an iPad, I will just keep repeating the words "TEN INCH SCREEN". You tell me something, I say: TEN INCH SCREEN. You try to say something else, I just keep saying TEN INCH SCREEN, TEN INCH SCREEN, TEN INCH SCREEN, TEN INCH SCREEN.... And if that fails, I always got the superior GPU, CPU and ridiculous amount of apps to fall back on.

I really hope someone comes, and proves me wrong, showing a device that is just as good as the iPad in every way. I want to be proven wrong.

But why do I care so damn much about 10 inch screens? Well, the reason is simple. Why do you buy a tablet? Don't know about you, but I bought it to "use" it. Not for it to look pretty, not only for games, and not for the novelty factor. I recognized how great of a tool it is for PDFs. That is the biggest thing I care about. I need to read PDF technical books, such as Cisco CCNA prep, and other stuff like that. Tried doing it on a Nook and Kindle and it was a frigging disaster. Pages get torn, pictures get spread between pages, diagrams, charts and graphs are unreadable. The Nook color is better for this stuff as it allows you to pan and scroll, but why would I want to do that, when I can see the full page, with descent size font on the iPad?

Ok, you may have another argument up your sleeve. eInk is better for the eyes compared to the LCD screen. Yeah, you got me there, it probably is. But I didn't get an ebook reader to just read novels. I want to read ANYTHING I may want to and not be limited in any way. Plus, I stare at an LCD monitor every day, most of the day. My health is already being destroyed by RF radiation, microwaves, TVs, LCD screens, the sun, the pollution and whatnot. I doubt the iPad can make it any worse. Besides, we dont even know if we'll live past 2012. But until then, I am happy to have such a wonderful device that will help me pass the CCNA exam, without spending a single penny on study materials, (short of the iPad off course). Plus, did I mention I can play the GO boardgame on a beautiful 10 inch screen and take it anywhere with me? ; )

Different strokes for different folks. I'm a huge Apple fanboy myself, but that doesn't make other tablets bad. I think the reason a lot of geeks detest Apple products is that you can't tinker & tweak them OOTB - you have to jailbreak an iPhone before you can really customize it. And as this is a geek forum, Apple products get a lot of hate for being too simplistic & locked-down to be any fun.

I personally like the iPad for its ease of use. It "just works" and doesn't have a learning curve. If iOS didn't exist, I'd probably be a huge Android fanboy. I remember tinkering heavily with Windows Mobile back in the day and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. Nerds love the Nook Color because of it's hackability. Doesn't make it bad, just a different product for different people. My point is, chocolate ice cream is the best.

While I just skimmed this, I found it funny you touting the 10" screen so much. Thats one of the reasons I DONT like the ipad, xoom, etc., and really enjoyed the original Galaxy Tab. Now, I don't own any of them, and while I really dislike Apple as a whole, the 10" android tablets really don't do it for me, so...yeah, i guess subjective?

Wrong forum. This belongs in Off Topic. Even All Things Apple don't deserve this trash.

While I agree the ipad is the best tablet out there, it's the OS that makes the difference. The Transform hardware wise has nothing to be ashamed of compared to the iPad, it's just the OS isn't there yet. Honeycomb has lots of promise and will mature. But the OS and more importantly, the apps aren't there yet. Once that happens the competition will be there.

what's funny is I stopped by the Verizon booth at the mall and showed my friend the Xoom. She kept pointing at the other Android 2.2 tablet sand I kept explaining that those things were just magnified phones. Like a giant phone basically.

Then I pointed her to the xoom and said "See, this is Android 3.0 which is totally different."

that thing was running 15fps I swear. So jerky that it was worse than my Motorola Milestone @ stock 550mhz. Yuck. Not sure if it was just THAT one display model because the ones I played with at the Engadget meetup were far speedier feeling.

Um, I do like the 7" screen of the Nook. I use it primarily as a book reader. It is much more portable than a ipad. I dont carry stuff as a fashion statement. And I like the ability to expand to a bigger sd card. Something you cannot do with the ipad. And the ability to browse it and add/remove files in windows explorer... and, you get the idea. Half of the stuff you claimed, was opinion and not fact. And pretty bias. But then you knew that already.

this subject again?
other tablets suck because there wasnt really any good OS's for such. Android came the closest but it was first and foremost for Cell phones and fairly new at that leaving Google to supply the demand for such, hence we now have 3.0 but the user experience just isn't really there by comparison and its infrastructure leaves it open to "bad" apps. Apple has been making OS's forever and already planned out iOS for use with the hardware and planned it all out while the others just tried to rush too quick to jump on the sudden trend wagon.

Funny, I like most stuff about the iPad except the 10inch screen.
I like the 7" form factor better as long as they can fit higher resolutions on there.
Certain 7" tablets have promised 1280x800 before but none yet to date.

ipad has a very mature OS making for a smoother experience, particularly for end users who are not tech oriented, props IMHO must and should be given to Apple for this. Any device which gets people interested in tech to the point that they will open their wallets in droves
is good for the industry as a whole.

All that said, the number one thing I look for in a device is screen quality.I own both a rooted Nook Color and an Asus Transformer, both devices have fabulous screens, both devices also provide me with great value in that improvements & refinements are ongoing thanks to a very active Android Development community.

I enjoy freedom,I enjoy having choices, I choose Android.

Well the reason is, IT'S GOT A 10 INCH SCREEN and manages to be a quality device at the same time. Show me another tablet that does both of these things at the same time.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101. /thread.

Yes, it's Android. Yes, the interface isn't as smooth as iOS. No, it doesn't have as nice of a camera.

However, yes, it does have a stunning 1280x800 (bigger than the iPad / iPad 2) IPS display, and yes, it does have a microSD slot built in. Oh, and that's not to mention the dock that adds a full SDHC slot, two USB ports, and a secondary battery.

Does your iPad dock into a keyboard with a secondary battery, essentially turning it into a notebook when you need it? Didn't think so.

The iPad is a wonderful device, however, saying that there are no other good tablets out there is just silly. You either haven't done your research, or you've become what you used to despise.

I'd be careful with that whole /thread thing, I bought a first gen ASUS netbook and it had all kinds of odd problems, and the HC OS is still pretty hacked together as well.

And if you knew a little more about the iPad, you'd know that there are quite a few physical keyboard solutions for the iPad available, as well as many file sharing solutions like DropBox.

That being said, I wish you all the best and hope you have a great experience with your Transformer.

10" is fine is you're not going anywhere but if I'm going to be out and about, 7" is infinitely more portable and easier to handle. It's the same argument people use for the iPhone, they don't want a larger phone so they like a smaller screen because it's a smaller phone and more portable. Smaller screen means more portable tablet. 10" if you're at home, 7" for portability. I'm not saying 10" sucks as it's great for home use but OP saying anything other than 10" sucks is retarded. Only thing though is that 4:3 sucks now-a-days. iPad is a media consumption device, 16:10 is more preferable.

iPad isn't the end all be all, people seem to forget we're just starting to get any competition. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is the iPhone all over again. Apple got the initial jump but they'll get overwhelmed by the competition.

I don't like iOS but that's for a different thread.

Not with a secondary battery and USB / SD ports, though. ;)

So far, so good with the Transformer. No problems to report. That's not to say that it's as smooth or stable as the iPad; however, anyone that says nothing at all competes with the iPad is just ignorant.

Just as I didn't lock or move Shortylickens thread regarding his troubles with the iPhone 4, I'm not planning on touching with this one either. Ibex has a differing view than the majority but he backs up option with details on his thoughts. I would encourage people to respond to the points he raised and not tell him to take it to another forum. This is the gadgets forum and tablets are, to my mind, gadgets. If you disagree counter with a real reason. Don't just label him a troll or tell him to take it somewhere else.
