I don't get it what's the difference...
They seem to be the same thing to me..but a friend is insisting that there are some *important* differences.

SUVs have a horrible reputation of killing innocent people and ruining the environment.

SAVs have no such bad vibes following them around, they are carefree and FUN :)

i think its just marketing fodder. Something to differentiate them from others.

Of course it could be some grand insurance conspiracy. Not sure if the X5 carry's the cheap insurance for being classified as a "utility" vehicle.

In any case, its a sweet car.

An SUV has always been classified as a big, haul all of your gear around, big and bulky car. The X5 is more of a sports car with a bigger body than an SUV. It performs much better than any other SUV's (excluding the new porsche one, i havn't seen a comparison though). It's an activity vehicle, not a utility vehicle. Those things are fast!

It's pretty simple actually. The X5 is a good car, and a poor truck. It has less cargo capacity and passenger room than even BMW's small 3-Series Wagon, not to mention BMW's 5-Series Wagon. Also, look at it's low profile tires. It's meant to be a corner carver.

No one buys an X5 for its cargo capacity or off-road ability b/c it sucks at both.

I still can't believe they sell. I mean... I would've just gotten a 3(Xi) series. People who buy it probably think they are safer than cars and the damn badge.
