Why the hell does the credit union need to ask me for my address when I'm depositing a couple of checks?

WTF? I went through the drive-thru of my credit union yesterday to depost a couple of checks (about $400 total). I already had the little deposit slip filled out (no cash back) and sent it up the chute. Woman takes about 3 mins, then she calls back and asks me to verify my address??

WTH. I'm not withdrawing any money. My name is on the checks. My name is signed on the checks. I'm putting the money into my account. I know my account number. WTF do you need me to verify my address for? I mean, is someone going to impersonate me and...GASP...DEPOSIT money into my account?

Sheesh.

I do everything by ATM now for that very reason. Less stuff to fill out when making deposits via ATM. Plus I get perverse pleasure from watching the expressions of people behind me in line when I reach for the deposit envelope.

That's a very good question. Generally the banks I've dealt with don't care when you are depositing, only withdrawals require ID.

why didn't you have some fun with them and just say, "Awww, you caught me. I'm a complete stranger to this... this... whatever his name is. I was just trying to do a random act of kindness and put some money into his account."

But, in reality, isn't it possible that something mailed to you may have come back as undeliverable (perhaps due to a postal error) and they just wanted to verify your address?

Doubt it. I get statements from them every month.
