Why the hell does my AXP 1700+ TbredA idles at 50-55 Degrees Celcius?

I have no freaking idea why and I'm not even overclocking it. My FSB is at 133 and my ram is at 166. I have a Vantec 6027D with a Speed Controller on it which I definitely need otherwise the fan will sound like a jet plane.

It's idling at that temp because you have the fan turned down too low. I'm willing to bet it's all the way down, huh?

Your temps are fine. Keep in mind though you have the TBred 'A' which ran hotter than TBred 'B'. AMD added an extra layer of metal to make the TBred 'B' scale higher and run cooler.

If you're not overclocking, it doesn't matter. Even if you are overclocking, it doesn't matter. 55C is far from a dangerous temp for a chip.

The accuracy of the temp readings you are getting is questionable as well, let stability be your guide.

If you have a speed controlled fan that is not in JET mode all the time I would question the MB reading you are getting. I would imagine that if the fan controller which I assume is based on a cpu temp gauge really read 55c it would be on JET mode all of the time.

Well, where did you put the temp sensor? It's actually supposed to be on the die, I believe. Anyway, I wouldn't run my processor that hot, but, it does seem awfully strange to me that the fan isn't running "wide open", even at idle, if the temp is actually 55°C. Also, like others have said, you would definitely be having stability issues, if it were running too hot, so as long as it's stable, why worry? I mean, really, another $60, for another chip next year wouldn't kill you, right? 😉

I think people confuse instability at high temps with instability period. If a chip is unstable, you'll get more errors the hotter it gets... if a chip is stable, temperature doesn't really matter that much. Mine was running perfectly stable at 60C before I cleaned the heatsink and applied AS5... now it runs 55C and it's still perfectly stable.

I'm using the MSI PC Alert4 that came with my MSI K7N2L Mobo.

I applied some thermal paste and it actually went down acouple degrees C.
