Why the hell does is cost $1400 to fly from EWR to SAT non-stop?

Anyone know of a travel site that you enter for stops but screen by whether you have to de-plane or not? flying out 03/16 and back May 12th. I need to check the 2 NY airports too I guess. Last time it was only around $300 on Continental.

Because you are booking last minute and all the cheap seats are sold...

The same trip booked a few weeks out is $254

Looking at one-way in May is still $600+

Looks like Orbitz shows if you have to change planes or not.

One-way is almost always more expensive than round trip. if you need to go one-way, book a round trip and skip the return trip

I used to think that too, but that is not always the case.

Not sure if it was the economic downturn or what, but a number of times this last year I have flown more cheaply by getting two one-way tickets. Sometimes it is only one leg of the trip that jacks up the price.

It is only $700 round trip (nonstop) to Austin which isn't too far away on JetBlue, or $464 round trip (nonstop) to Austin if you are willing to travel Monday. One more hotel night may be well worth the savings.

It looks as low as $220 if you are willing to have a short stop and the short drive to Philly.

It's not me, it's for my MIL. I don't think she could handle the plane changes and she certainly won't be driving anywhere. Man these last minute travel plans suck.

Had to deal with this crap with my mother in law at Christmas. She absolutely refuses to do any planning so let us know around the end of November that she wanted to come down for Christmas. In previous years we had been able to book a flight for her from Montreal to DC round trip for around $250.00. This year the cheapest I could get was $500.00 so we ended up lying to her and covering the extra $200.00.

I'm spoiled. I regularly fly from Orlando, FL to Knoxville, TN non-stop for less than $40. I even flew for $12 once.

Same here. The year before last my wife ended up driving her the 650 miles to our house. We got her a plane ticket back. Lady drives me nuts!

Fly out of LaGuardia. It's almost always cheaper than Newark and they are connected by a relatively cheap and frequent bus service. You'll probably save hundreds of dollars doing this.

This.

American or a combo of Continental/Delta are both about $250rt for the OP's dates.

I'd probably go with American since the connection is through DFW.

I will never fly American again if I can't help it due to their S80s that fly between SA and Dallas. I've had to make an emergency landing on one last month due to the fact that only one power generator out of three was working. They sent us up with only two working and one of those failed in the air.

Scary times.

Only the ex-TWA ones seem to be real shitboxes, the AAs are just tired. Fortunately AA is slowly replacing them with new 737s or swapping over to AA Eagle CRJs.

That said for a savings of about $1100 bucks and avoiding having to connect through ATL I'd still pick American.

Could be worse though, like flying NW's ancient ass DC-9 fleet.

The best travel site tells me that your ONLY non-stop choice for a non-stop between those cities on those days is Continental for $1,405.

Your best choice is AA for $262 with one stop in DFW. Mostly MD-80 or MD-83 aircraft.

Call AA and ask a CSR if any of those flights do not require de-planing.

What a bitch. You should just tell her to f-off.

The woman was 85 years old the first time she stepped on an airplane. If she is willing to confront her fears like that we can deal with a little inconvenience when at age 88 she doesn't do advanced planning. We are just happy she is still willing to travel and live her life given her age and health issues.
