Why the hell do monitor stands cost so much?

My Dell LCD came with a stand....don't most LCDs?

Now a VESA wall mount is expensive, but it's b/c such a tiny minority of people that actually buy monitors will drop the cash on some funktacular stand that they can pick their price.

I'm talking about the metal mounts that basically left the lcds off the ground.

they are cheap to manufacture but due to the coolness factor they are gonna charge you. That and I'm sure since the volume that are produced are low, since each LCD panel is different they're gonna try to recoup their investment.
