The show was originally filmed, which was immediately converted to video to save costs while editing and putting in special effects. Also airing it as video reduces copyright costs and such. We never had a chance to see it in HD. As opposed to The Original Series and movies which were film straight converted to HD.

The old film stock is being digitized in HD and the episodes are being recut with modern special effects.

I guess that's neat, but as I understand it TNG was very story focused correct? I didn't follow the series in order... just saw a couple episodes here and there. Just seems to me that the best part of the series isn't going to be changed by going HD since it was all story and acting based.
