Hire midgets to hold your speakers up, or giant people if you need them really high ;)

I dunno why, I've never had to buy speaker stands hehe.

build some simple ones yourself :)
they're expensive because they know people will pay for them ;)

i think i'll just get some of those swing arm lamps, remove the "lamp" part and mount my speakers on those, depending on how much load these arms can handle

If you're putting them next to a wall, just get a little shelving kit from wal-mart or something. An L brace and one of the white mela<something> boards, and you're all set.

Wondered the same thing myself, when I bought some. Luckily I ran across some at a Radio Shack that had been dicontinued, and got them for about 40% of the marked price.

Speaker stands classify as an accessory. Retailers nowadays make all their money on accessories (cables, stands, service plans, etc). Seriously, I have seen printer cables for $35 at Best Buy and an employee friend told me the actual cost is something along the lines of $2 and change. Same way with stands.

sure, a stand seems cheap to buy, but keep in mind that the materials used to make it doesn't just fall down from the sky. it's mostly the material and quality that costs so much. sure, you can get some cheaper particle board stands, but also you can get some solid wood or aluminum stands, which are nicer. some speakers stand also have features like floor spikes, etc, which improves the sound quality of the speaker for audiophiles who can notice them. this all comes down to quantity vs. quality!

No, I think Elemental has the reason. I used to work at CompUSA a few years ago, and the markup on items like cables is amazingly large. That printer cable example is fact -- their cost on most cables is less than $5. The difference between a regular parallel cable and an IEEE-1284 one was about $15 in price but only about $1.50 in actual cost. Sickening actually.

Good thing my home theater speakers are wall mountable. Thanks, Infinity! :D
