Why the heck do they close a website?

I'm a student at Indiana University. They have a web service called OneStart, that you use to do just about everything-register for classes, check posted grades, pay tuition, etc.

Unfortunately, they close down the whole website every night at 9:30 central time (I'm home in Chicago right now). Why on earth would they do that? I'm not allowed to check my grades, except at certain hours? Any logical reason I'm missing?

some sites just like to have a person sitting there admin'ing it. kinda defeats the purpose of most websites though, as they should be available 24/7. I've even been on a forum where you could only register from 9-5, monday - friday, weird.

my vote goes to the fact that the probably want to be watching at all times, and only staff someone until 9:30.. does defeat the purpose though. Glad my school doesn't do this, and definitely seems illogical.

of course the admins wanting the bandwidth for pr0n is probably more accurate

Bingo. If you shut everything down, you can make quick&dirty DB backups by just copying the entire fileset the DB is contained in.

it's all about maintenance. however, the smart thing would be to do this at like 2:30am, which is when my uni did it.

My school's website closes down for batch processing every night from midnight to 6 am. Updates never show until the day after they're made. Kinda goofy, but since it works they don't want to pay to replace a 15 year old system.
