Why the heck are SILVER floppy drives so RIDICULOUSLY hard to find in stock???

This is silly.

I've been waiting TWO weeks to find one in stock at a *reasonable* price (e.g. $10 or less). Newegg keeps extending their 'deadline', SVC, Directron, etc.. are all out of stock and no other place seems to have it for less than $15 - $30!!! (Fry's has it for $12, but then add more than $6 for shipping!)

WHY are these so hard to find?

Is Demand that much higher than supply nowadays? Is EVERYONE AND THEIR GRANDMOTHER ordering these things or something ?? :Q :|

Guess it's time to go buy a can of silver spraypaint.....

EDIT: Oh, and to those who keep asking what the heck I need them for:

Three scenarios:

1. RAID drivers ( I have two older Socket A systems with RAID setups)

2. My children actually still use FLOPPY disks at school

3. BIOS flashing on older systems still needs a floppy

Actually I'm pretty sure ONLY grandmothers still order floppy drives of any kind

People still use floppy drives?

BIOS flashing maybe, but that can be accomplished with an external drive from time to time as the need arises.

Unless you have fairly old hardware floppys are so obsolete. Their only saving grace was that you needed to flash your bios, most motherboards can flash the bios in an os now and everything else can be booted or run from CD or DVD.

Another vote for an external USB floppy drive. Most systems now days can boot off of these.

Or you can make a boot CD to flash with. That's what I did last time.

Ding ding ding! That's why!

Couldn't you just slipstream XP with something like n-lite and get it done that way?

Yes, and I have made Unattended installs before, but, in all honesty, when dealing with several systems, some that will not be my own, it's simply easier to ensure they have a floppy disk, and then install that way.

Meh, I just got an Ultra (black) floppy/media reader combo. Considering I still need floppies for legacy devices and RAID drivers, and my old camera uses Smart media cards, it's not a "waste of space." Besides, I'd rather not have to have something my cats can knock off the table when I'm not looking.

For the record, Mistumi devices tend to be incompatible with some (or all, I can't remember) Asus boards. Ultra makes a pretty good combo drive, like the one I mentioned above.

Good luck Ran... now I feel lucky that I got one from Directron like 5 years ago, they probably haven't been in stock since
