Might want to email your buddy back and ask him for the rest of the missing screws and whatever else was removed from your "new" card

Just noticed it now that you pointed it out, he never opened it, I was the one who cut the seal open so it seems like EVGA messed up or something. Anyways I am sending it back to him and he is going to send me a replacement once he gets it back.

man this thread will soon turn into a conspiracy infestation. Friend selling something to another friend for cheap (when he can sell it for much more on fleabay). Then other friend later found out screw is missing, and not just any screw, one of the big screw too. Conspiracy theorist galore here lol. gl.

btw does your friend happen to be Vinny da Bull who works for some warehouse in Brooklyn?

Yea I spoke to him about it already and he said send it back to him and he is going to send it back to Newegg to get a replacement. So how do you guys think this happened? Did EVGA f*&^ up? I am 100% sure it wasn't my friend cause the seal was not tampered with and I cut it open myself..
EDIT: for profanity.

what the hell... have you tested the card?

if everything works, why not keep it? shipping it back to him and him back to you once he gets a replacement, it will eat up all the "savings" you got.

when you send it back to him, send your friend a gift. or at least a card. that was a really cool thing for him to do.

I don't feel too bad for paying close to what a GTX470 costs for my GTX460. I got a fully intact card and got to enjoy it for most of the summer holiday :) You can always "wait", but there's always either something new, or a big price drop, just around the corner...

its a brand new card and it would be foolish to keep it when its obviously missing a screw that holds something on it. just because it works doesn't make it a good idea to keep it. let them work it out but no way in hell I would keep a card with obvious issue.

Like I said it depends on how it is. If all its missing is one screw then I would keep it and not worry about it. But if its missing a screw plus it has some wear like it was used or if there are any issues of course return is in order.

It will be foolish for all that extra shipping cost/hassle for 1 missing screw, if the card is in fine working order. And it probably isnt too hard to find a replacement or to have them ship you a whole missing screw.

Good catch....Surprised you had time with the flaring testosteron in the VC&G forum.

I'm hoping for his sake he removed them himself to apply better compound or maybe a water block on the card.

I guess I just dont trust a product that is missing a screw. it looks to be a pretty important one that actually holds the cooler on maybe. that means that this card was assembled improperly and then of course it was also handled and shipped all over the place in that condition. I would have no confidence in using it even if it appears to be working properly.

I agree it will be a mess to work something with having the other guy take care of it though. my peace of mind is worth more than that plus its still an okay deal if he has to only pay the return shipping. either way this thread has turned out to be quite odd as I have a hard time believing EVGA could be that careless. maybe the guy should just contact EVGA directly since surely his friend gave him the receipt.

I would not run the card like that. It looks like one of the screws that hold down the heatsink on the GPU(at least thats EXACTLY where the screws that hold down the cooler on my MSI 460 cyclone are).

That would be like running your CPU with the heatsink not secured properly and how man of you would do that? not a good idea.

You can easily re-seal plastic. I'm guessing your friend was messing around with different coolers and overclocking, wasn't happy with the performance, realized it was going to be tough to return a card he'd taken apart, then you came along...

Not saying he did anything shady to you, just saying that he probably didn't tell you the whole story. I bet he just puts the screws back in and sends it back to you as an RMA...

Did you copy the serial number before you sent it back?

Badboy,
Same as mine and just to make you feel better I paid twice the amount than what you did and that was only 3 months ago.

I know this card would not run right, those 4 screws, just like cpu hold downs are critical. They have to be torqued max, and evenly. AMD cards usually employ spring loaded screws, I notice Nvidia cards with their big heat spreaders sometimes don't. The load probably is spread across the gpu die easier with a bigger surface area.
For all we know, the hole is not tapped in the heat sink in that corner, I have heard of that happening.
Could also be a million other reasons there is no screw there, none of them good.

Yea, I sent it back to him today. Should get another one soon and once I do, it's picture time again!

EDIT: Oh yea and I forgot to add I found the screw in the non-static bag it came in, seems like it broke off so I didn't wanna mess with it and sent it back.

^ good idea IMO, I didn't realize your card came sealed, I figured your friend had taken the heatsink off to look around and then just forgot to put them all back in.

But if the screw just fell out...time to rma for sure, who knows what else is bad with that lemon. QRA is never 100% perfect, if it was then the cards would cost 2x more just to pay for all the QRA.
