Why the fvck did Epstein not sign Todd Walker?

The Cubs nabbed him for measley $1.75 million, one year contract. Instead we got Pokey Reese.

Epstein also screwed up relationships with Garciaparra and Ramirez by trying to trade for Arod.

He better resign Varitek, Nixon and Ortiz to long term contracts.

Damn I'm pissed!!!!

Won't you always be until the Red Sox win the World Series?

I'm pretty sure we have a good chance of winning it all next year.

He wanted to stay, but obviously they did not want him. Even 1.75M is a lot considering how much they played Jackson in his place last season.

The way I understand it is that they didn't want to offer him salary arb, since he'd probably take it. This would almost guarantee that he get a raise from the $3+M he was making. By not offering him arb., they couldn't sign him at all until May. They could have worked out a contract if they offered arb., but why would he negotiate a 1.75M contract when he could get almost 4 through arb.?

Well, he did decide to sign a less then $2 mil contract with Cubs instead of trying to working out a contract.

After they decided not to offer arbitration to Walker they could no longer negotiate with him until the spring.

They do not have the same market share as the Yankees and couldn't afford arbritation with Walker.

I wouldn't worry about Walker leaving - he had a career year last year and while he performed very well in the playoffs they still have a potent offense.

They may not score 950 runs this year but with better pitching and defense they won't have to.

A lot was made about not signing Walker or doing the Arod trade, but the Sox greatly improved their chances by adding depth with Schilling and Foulke. Let them concentrate on resigning Ortiz, Nixon, etc., and they'll be fine.

Walker would have held all the cards while negotiating if the Sox offered him arb. If they offered, he's guaranteed to make what he did last year with a raise (guessing around 3.5M). If they couldn't agree on a contract, he could just accept the arb. salary. He had no reason to accept less than 3.5M through arb (except for sentimental reasons). The Sox new he would have accepted arb. and didn't want to pay him this, so they pretty much did what they had to do. Not that I agree, but I understand what happened (or at least I think I do 🙂).
