Why the expensive watch?

Are watches just status symbols?

Why do people insist on having high-quality watches that are ultra precise? In the whole scheme of things being a few seconds off does not matter.

Is the art of paying for an uber expensive watch the added precision? Is the precision meant to reflect quality and thus validate the purchase as being worthy of the inordinate amount of money?

I wonder how many people with extremely precise watches sync them with atomic clocks.

The whole idea of a watch as a status symbol is kind of funny to me (that you would be on schedule and be a slave to time.) I'm not saying that I don't keep schedule (I'm just a little above average in my income), but if you were truly a master of your own domain (rich) you would not need to wear a watch. So I wonder why people buy expensive watches for anything other than the bling bling factor.

Further, does anyone actually look at the wrists of others? I've never in my life made it a point to look at a watch. Do you make it a habit to look for them?

why wear anything? Because you like it! I find that the watches I like generally are more expensive so if I have the money I buy it.

I wouldnt give up my Omega Seamaster or Oris TT1 diver for anything! :D

actually expensive watches are usually mechanical and as such are not as precise as the relatively cheaper digital watches. you don't buy expensive watches if you care about accuracy. usually the wearer treats it as a piece of jewelry, or has special interest in high quality mechanical watches.

Why wear anything? Well I see clothes as being different. They have an immediate impact and impression on the person you interact with. You can't avoid looking at clothing. I never really ever look at the wrist to see what kind of watch people wear, though. So it confuses me to an extent.

Interesting! I always thought that people paid more for the precision.

if you want precision, a 100-dollar electronic watch is about as precise as you can get. 1000-dollar mechanical watches are actually inferior for time keeping.

and I do sync my electronic watch to atomic clock software every once in a while to within 1 second ;)

i wear a nice watch because it was a graduation present. it's really nice and tells me what time it is. I had it custom fit to my wrist too. it's really handy for my emt class because we need watches to do certain types of assessments.

I've seen electronic watches with messed up timing before, probably they were "overclocked"....heheehhee. But yes, you're right on the precision of the mechanical watches.

Now, as far as mechanical watches are concerned, the more precise they can be with regards to timing, the more expensive they get. The value is not in how close they are to there digital counterparts in time keeping, but in how intricate the mechanism that's used to keep that timing. And of course, there are certain perceived values with brand names, materials used, and status quo.

There is a saying that you can tell a lot about a man by looking at his shoes and his watch, to a certain extent, this is true.

We work long hours to make more money, so we can afford expensive watches, to keep track of time, which we lack, due to our overworking.

Personally, I could well afford to buy probably any watch made and sold today (Excluding Antique or Collectors items), but I prefer to just go to Wal-mart, etc. and get something that looks nice and works well.
My next to last watch lasted nearly 6 years, and probably would have went even longer had I not broken the crystal and gotten water in it. $10 at a Discount store = $1.70 per year!

I have a Cartier (?) at home the wife bought me many years ago, but I've only worn it once!

why expensive anything?

more importantly, why assume people wear them for status factor? a fake rolex would get that point across better than a "real" high-dollar watch

Maybe, Maybe not!
Never heard of it.

Edit: Googled patek; I could afford to buy anything they have, but THAT would be the epitome of stupid to spend that kind of money on a watch!
Heck, a Rolex would be bad enough!
