i need to write an essay with the following prompt:

For an African American female, growing up in the South must have been difficult -- but not impossible! Explain how, despite the odds stacked against them, Maya Angelou and her community nurture a spirit that rises above and succeds.

if you have it easy, you tend not to try very hard to better yourself. if you have it hard, like angelou, then you do your best to better yourself in order to get out of the bad situation heh

same way slaves in the old south were able to stay positive and stay tight. being persecuted as a group tends to bring the group closer together, fostering a community spirit. i'd type some more random thoughts, but its been years since i read the book itself, and well sparknotes does it better.
