Why Such a Price increase in GPU's when it comes to RAM

Hey i posted this once before but i didnt really get a good answer. Now that im comin to buy my PC i have to know. When choosing Graphics cards why does the RAM make such a big difference in prices. Gforce 256MB 7900 upgraded to Gforce 512MB 7900 cost about £120 extra. But going from 7600 to 7900 costs less and they are completely different cards. How come?

Because the average user looks at the RAM on a video card and sees that it has doubled so they think the performance has doubled as well. I would just stick with the 7900 GT and overclock and if you want to you can always volt mod it.

The 7900GTX 512MB is faster, but not because of the additional memory, it is because it has higher clocks than the 256Mb version.

Kind of. It depends on what game you're playing and if you have any tweaks. For instance Oblivion can do 4096x4096 LOD mapping if you have 512 MB's of visual RAM, but if you only have 256MB's then you have to decrease the LOD mapping to 2048x2048.

As far as most things go, there doesn't extend to be much of a difference. I figure that the "more the merrier".
