I lived there for 20 years. I lived all over wayne county, starting at Brightmoor on Detroits West Side (a middle/lower class white neighborhood until the 70's). Redford, Westland, Inkster, Romulus, Livonia, ypsi, west bloomfield, troy, Detroit proper (7/grand river, 8/telegraph)Eventually ending up in A2 before I moved down to America's Wang.
Its a craphole. Any place where there are multiple square miles of unoccupied, boarded up, graffitti'd, homeless people and gangland used skyscrapers in the downtown area - there has got to be a problem.
The last 10 years have been the worst. The criminals that managed to get elected (starting with coleman young from as far back as I remember) simply shook the city down until kilpatrick essentially ass-raped the last few cents. Every project had an interest, whether a contractor friendly to those in charge or a family member who was slipped business or outright received money stolen from the treasury.
Back in 1994 I distinctly remember my mothers old friend we visited telling a story about a woman who was carjacked and shot in the chest and left on the street to die. The friend ran to a police substation for help, and the officers inside were smoking crack. They told her to go away and call 911...
The house in which I lived from 0-4 was a crackhouse in 1989, burned down in 1992, the basement filled with water and used to dispose of dead prostitutes and crime victims for a number of months.
Until I moved out of MI I never thought it was abnormal to have crackhouses on just about every street and abandoned utility and factory buildings everywhere.
They ought to bulldoze the whole city from Telegraph to the river and build a farm.
