Why so many....

So, ATI has 4 high-end, 16-pipe cards:

CARD MEM SPEED CORE SPEED
X800XT 1000 500
X800XTPE 1120 520
X850XT 1080 520
X850XTPE 1180 540

So, out of four cards, there is a range of 180 MHz on the RAM (15%) and 40 MHz (7%) on the core speed....

Why, besides working the dollar, are there so many cards?? And why is the X850XT slower than the X800XTPE (not to mention the X850 pro...)

Talk about steps backward. Yes, I know this is old news, but still... it bugs me, especially since these are actually all available at Newegg now and the prices are pretty similar.

You should be glad for those minor differences, you can often get very similar performance for a lot less money in situations like this.

I think you're hitting on some AGP vs PCIE differences as well, but I haven't really been into ATIs lineup of late.
