Why shut down instead of stand-by ?

Hello,

I'm using XP and, since the beginning of the week, when I want to put my PC on stand-by, it gives me the usual screen "preparing to stand-by" and then it shuts down (the usual blue light in front of my Sonata tower no longer blinks). When I hit the Enter key, the PC just reboots (the weird thing is that I still could get out of the stand-by mode by hitting Enter). The hibernation mode is off and I don't think I have made any change to the settings (although I probably did by mistake).

Does it ring a bell ?

Thanks !

Not really sure from your description how you are intending to set up your system, but it sounds like you need to also go into the BIOS power management area & adjust a few setting/options to tailor the system to do what you want.

I have noticed the same problem this is on a computer that has been working well for 2 years now when I standby It reboots upon restarting. I always just hit the space bar and in 10 second I was up and running, now I have to enter my password to get to the desktop like a restart but it is showing the slow flashing power lite and starts from the space bar just weird?

Glad to see I'm not alone...

I have gone into the BIOS and did not find anything related to the stand-by mode...

Doesn't happen here on my Toshiba Laptop 1415-S105
and that is XP Home SP2 and most other windows updates
except for the full SP3 ... I put it in Standby and then just hit a
key and presto, back to the desktop like it should be.

I think you just have it set so that you need to enter a password when resuming from stand-by.

1. Click "Start", choosing "Control Panel".
2. Select the "Power Options" control panel.
3. When the "Power Options Properties" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Advanced" tab.
4. Uncheck "Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby".
5. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.

I thought about that but all is set correctly and it has not been doing this every time like today it has been fine just comes out of standby ready to go. The only thing I have noticed is that I do have windows update set to notify and it may be that when there is an update that I have downloaded and installed that wants a restart I will sometimes tell it to do so later when I am in the middle of something. It may be that when I then go to standby it restarts instead? I will have to watch this and see if that is the case as I did have the latest malicious software removal tool installed but not restarted when I last noticed the problem with the standby failure.

Well, I'm afraid mine does it all the time and I don't think I have any pending XP update waiting for a reboot. No issue with passwords either.
