Rally in support of Russian athletes staged near Canadian Embassy in Moscow
MOSCOW. Feb 23 (Interfax) - Moscow saw a rally in support of Russian athletes at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, when about 50 schoolchildren gathered near the Canadian Embassy at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, an Interfax correspondent has reported.
"We are a great sports power. If the Northern Americans want to prove they are stronger, they should not prove it on the shoulders of our athletes," said Maxim Korotkov-Gulyayev, organizer of the rally and a member of the organizing committee of the Movement of Progressive Youth.
The protesters held slogans reading "Canada+USA=Disgrace," "Sports Without Politics," "We are for Objective Judging," "Sikharulidze and Berezhnaya, we know who is first!"
The participants in the action chanted "Russia, Forward! Shame on Canada!"
Korotkov-Gulyayev also handed over a letter to the Canadian ambassador, which, in particular, points to "unfriendly moves by the Canadian side towards Russian athletes and the Russian national team in general at the Olympics in Salt Lake City."
"In our opinion, Canadian athletes are capable of winning at the Olympics, including figure skating, without undercover intrigues," reads the letter.
The presentation of the Canadian pair with a second set of gold medals is "an indicator of the athletes' weakness and incapability of winning in a fair competition," reads the letter. "The most decent move on the Canadian part would be to abandon the second set of gold medals," it reads.
The rally in support of Russian athletes lasted about 20 minutes.
Well as I see it the Canadians pulled a big scam on all of us. The French judge is now telling the truth that it was the Canadian delegation who put pressure on her. I think the Canadians were better that night but the scoring should have stood. That whole thing just made the Olympics worse for everyone.
