Why risk losing your job over stealing from an unlocked vending machine

No Lifer
We have been moving my company this weekend so everything is a mess at the new building.

The vending company dropped off the machines from our old building, but for some stupid reason left with them unlocked.

Apparently the movers discovered this and basically took all the snacks and most of the sodas from the 3 machines, plus some asshat decided to take over $150 in change.

Anyway they ended up finding the coins wrapped in 5 paper wrapped bundles stuck in a restroom. Someone turned the dude in.

We weren't getting involved in this despite we monitor almost every square inch of the building...the vending company tried to demand we take action on it, even hinted at us reimbursing them...our stance to the vending company was we let them place their machines for free...we do not want to handle an investigation for them. They ended up taking care of it on their own.

In answer to your question: Because people are dumb.

Seriously look at all the dumb stuff people do everyday. You dont have to look hard.
And then think about what they are risking by taking such actions.
Their life. Their wife. Family. Friends. Career. General health. Sanity.
If nothing else their bright, shiny toys.

People are dumb, and if we dont start getting smarter we may be in trouble as a species.

We had a guy steal soda cans from the vending machine and was fired for it. Why would someone risk their cushy job over a $0.60 soda can is beyond my comprehension.

lol

Everyone steals from vending machines.

It would probably actually be kinda interesting to understand the psychology behind it.

The vending machines at work are retarded and much too easy to steal from.

I have never stolen anything from a vending machine.

I have never stolen anything from a vending machine.

I can admit I have gotten a freebee from time to time...but I wasn't about to touch the cash even on machines left open.

Some locks are actually easily defeatable on older machines.

I don't steal or kill for fun.

I used to work in an large concert hall while I was in college. There was an outside company that came in and ran concessions during events, and they would constantly leave their refigerater cases unlocked. All of us students would take the occasional soda, but one time they left an alcohol fridge open and we nabbed about a dozen bottles of beer. In retrospect, it was probably really stupid, but would I do it again? Probably.

Definitely not worth it. Every now and then I get the urge to just randomly snatch someone off the street, grab them by the hair and ram their face repeatedly into a light pole while screaming "Why are you all so ***damn stupid!"

I need to quit watching the news I guess...

I was at work and the vending machine had a little problem.... You'd hit the coin return and it was like a slot machine just hit lucky 7.

One of the big vending machine rapes I was part of in 1986 was the juice can machine in the boy's locker room. If you pushed and pulled the coin return while pushing and pulling the juice lever, the juice popper out.

They later on broke off the coin return lever and we'd use a pencil.

Thinking about it more, it is probably because the damn vending machines rip us off all the time.

One time a friend put a 10$ bill into the vending machine, and $20.00 came up on the screen. We were like, Whoa!

Sure enough, after he purchased something.. he got like 18$ in change back.

We tried to do it again, and it just read it as a 10$ bill... lol

we had a guy who was getting paid well over $100k a year get fired for stealing a case of pepsi (wich was free in teh break room). he was takeing a case home every day for a monthy.

i asked him why he did it and he couldnt give me a reason. i told him if he needed money for pop that bad i would have given him another $30 a week. but couldnt allow him to steal from me.

I've gotten extras b4 I but never stolen

I only time I "stole" from a vending machine was when I bought one bottle of soda and two popped out. It's not my fault a bottle was stuck in there.
